Mine has tried to downshift when I let off the gas at highway speeds twice, once before the update and once after, so I'm going to say it didn't work. At least it tries to works it way down through the gears and never has shifted straight to first.

From what Ford filed with the NHTSA this update appears to be only intended to prevent the dangerous downshift to first gear when the output speed sensor fails (intermittently or otherwise). The current firmware interprets that condition as the vehicle has slowed down and first gear is appropriate because the OSS reads "zero RPM." The firmware update changes the behavior so that if a few milliseconds ago we were going 50 MPH and now we are going 0 MPH something is obviously wrong so don't shift to first gear. The other part of the update will cause the MIL to display so that you'll get the OSS serviced. Previously there would be no indication to the driver, other than the abrupt change to first gear :), that anything had malfunctioned. I don't think we'll notice any change in the normal behavior after the update (and indeed I only noticed sharper shifts during the "training" period as the dealer warned me about, but those smoothed out pretty quickly and I see absolutely no difference now in how the transmission behaves after the most recent update).

This is sadly similar to the engineering snafu plaguing Boeing right now with the 737 MAX. Failing to validate input data for valid ranges and transitions on a single-sensor control system isn't good engineering practice. This was a "bug" and Ford (hopefully) fixed it the second time.

Mine has never stuck in gear or randomly downshifted

It's only downshifted jerk on acceleration. I dont drive like a madman so I have caught this on occasion. I can't imagine this happening under hard acceleration.
So I assumed that the recalibration addressed this as well?

My ESP runs out next year. I placed a reminder on my calendar. I plan on renewing or purchasing a NEW ESP plan.

I have used my ESP on my faulty brake line at the master cylinder, sun roof, and 2x on the 3rd brake light being waterlogged

So, after speaking with the dealer this morning they indicated this service builtin is for the #2 update and as well with having the new update done the truck now has warranty until 2023.

Finally got around to swapping out my main lead frame. So far it has solved my issues. Went ahead and did a flush also, the old fluid looked like burned motor oil, truck has 100k on it and this was the first trans service. No tuning or updates from Ford either

I noticed that after I had the PCM update done that I now have a DTC stored in the APIM:

===APIM DTC U0155:00-2B===
Code: U0155 - Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Control Module

Status:
- DTC Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is Off for this DTC

Module: Accessory Protocol Interface Module
===END APIM===

It seems unlikely that the update could be related to a DTC in the APIM but the timing of it showing up is suspicious. (I always read the DTCs before leaving the truck with a mechanic so that I have a baseline before they muck with stuff.)

If anyone has had the PCM update done and you have a means to read your DTCs, would you mind checking if you have a similar situation? I can't find anything that is not working anywhere in the truck and the instrument panel seems to be just fine... not a single hint of a problem.

I tried clearing the DTC but it of course immediately comes back since it is "present" and I also disconnected the battery for 20 minutes to see if I could reset everything and make the problem go away, but it did not.

Thanks.

If I remember, I'll hook mine up tonight with Forscan and scan for any codes.

I need to get in there to plug in my center dash speaker since I mounted my phone mount in the tray and forgot to hook the speaker back up- duh.

I am beginning to think if ultimately the Lead Frame changeout would be the final solution vs the Recalibration.

Anyone care to comment on this?

Just depends on if Ford improved the parts in the lead frame, or if you are just putting in the same old failure prone part as to if it's the final solution or a temporary solution. The change in programming is good either way IMO, there is no reason the truck should ever decide to downshift to 1st gear at 75 MPH no matter what. There are so many ways they can determine it's going 70+ MPH and therefore tell the PCM to NOT go into first, even if one or two of the sensors are saying go for it.

Since changing the lead frame I’ve been paying extra attention to trans temps. What’s the normal operating range for highway driving?

For most 195° is normal. I have the larger OEM trans cooler and I usually run at 190° and when moving slowly or in off-road mode with the fans running at a low speed I will see the temp drop to 185°.
