I had the downshift recall done "successfully" a few months ago and then noticed that Ford is asking for a do-over (at least for the 2013s):

  • Recall Date: JUN 10, 2019
  • Recall Title: 6R80 SUDDEN TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFT POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMMING
  • NHTSA Recall Number: 19V433
  • Ford Recall Number: 19S19
  • Recall Description: THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) SOFTWARE USED TO SERVICE 2013MY F-150 5.0L AND 6.2L VEHICLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH RECALL 19S07 DID NOT HAVE THE UPDATES NECESSARY TO PREVENT A POTENTIAL UNINTENDED DOWNSHIFT INTO FIRST GEAR AND ILLUMINATE THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) IN THE EVENT OF AN INTERMITTENT TRANSMISSION OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR (OSS) SIGNAL.
  • Risk to Safety: A VEHICLE WITHOUT THE INTENDED 19S07 CALIBRATION REMAINS AT RISK FOR UNINTENDED TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFT DUE TO AN INTERMITTENT OSS FAILURE. DEPENDING ON VEHICLE SPEED, AN ABRUPT TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFT TO FIRST GEAR WITHOUT WARNING COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy Program: OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY MAIL AND INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THEIR VEHICLE TO A FORD OR LINCOLN DEALER TO HAVE THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAMMED WITH THE APPROPRIATE SOFTWARE CALIBRATION. THERE WILL BE NO CHARGE FOR THIS SERVICE. FORD IS EXCLUDING REIMBURSEMENT FOR COSTS BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY PROGRAM WOULD PROVIDE FOR A FREE REPAIR FOR THIS CONCERN. FORD WILL FORWARD A COPY OF THE NOTIFICATION LETTERS TO DEALERS TO THE AGENCY WHEN AVAILABLE.

Mine is a 2013. I'll keep an eye out for the new letter. Thanks for the heads up!

I got the second letter too.

I am still on the fence about bringing it in at all. My truck is running great and I don't want the dealer mucking around under my hood.

I just got my '13 back from the dealer after having the recall completed. I also had them do a trans flush and new filter put in. I am at 89k and figured why not knock it out since it was already at the dealer.

The trucks shifts noticeably firmer and smoother. Thus far I am happy with the result. I'll update after a week or two to see if there are any changes.

Any update on reimbursements for the molded lead frame? I’m getting wrenches on the display but they just come and go. So when I take it in I would have to reflash back to stock and request that they not start the truck. My VIN is included in the molded leadframe extended warranty. But I know the chance of it being covered is probably slim to none for me, due to the SC and tuning. Any advice on this? What if I didn’t return the truck to stock when I brought it in?

Well I’m officially good and tired of dealing with dealerships as there aren’t any good ones in my area. I decided screw it, bought the molded lead frame off Ford parts for 156 bucks, and I’ll install it myself. Has anyone here done this on their own? There’s a couple vids on YouTube to follow. Just curious of any traps or tips you guys may have. Also, this doesn’t have to be programmed by the dealer or anything crazy like that does it?

It talks about the thermostat valve direction during installation (which may be a gotcha). The part about the software update is a little confusing though. The way it is written leads me to believe if you just replace the molded leadframe, you are not required to have a software update. But replacing the valve body would require a software update.
