I'm sure the service department would have really got a kick out of the fact that he had plunged some shit into his truck, it threw codes and upon removing it and two start cycles (which cleared the codes) everything is back to normal.

This limp mode issue is very rare, there's probably been 50-100 trucks reported on the F150 forum with the issue out of ~1m sold since 2015. For Ford, that's a rounding error. It just sucks if its your truck.
