Something I never really understood was why my old lawn mower burned up multi weight oil, but not SAE 30. If I used 10W-30, it would burn up the oil, and I'd have to add oil with each gas tank. When I used the exact same manufacturer SAE 30 (Valvoline MaxLife), I had zero oil consumption.

Now that was a small engine, and an old one too. It was a Honda built in the early 80's - and I used it through last year. I gave it to my cousin who's still using it. Just seemed weird to me how it would consistently burn up my 10-30

Since the oil was cold and more "mobile" you probably werent getting proper seals on things, which let oil into the combustion chamber and hence got burned off. I bet your oil consumption went down once it was all heated up and the oil was at temp (and 30w).

The straight 30 was thick enough to seal everything up properly and not burn as much oil off id bet.
