An Update:

We have arrived back home with no drama. The truck used a lot less oil on the return loop than it did going out. I attribute this to the Cobb tow tune and running in Sport instead of Tow/Haul.

Next steps are getting the valve covers replaced and then addressing any other engine issues. (Does burning that much oil hurt the cats or any sensors???) I also believe the whine is a rear pinion bearing... @#$%^&*

Thanks to all who stepped in with advice. I would have spent a ton of time/$$$ on the road trying to troubleshoot and correct the issue without the feedback here.

Still love the truck and am 100% pleased with the towing performance. Deal with the rear springs and don't be afraid to tow. Sent this to a buddy with a Cummins who thinks you need a 1-Ton to haul a bag of potting soil...


There were (are) a few issues that showed up on the trip that don't have anything to do with trailering. The truck handles the trailer exceedingly well. Raptors are not known to be good at pulling trailers but that is 100% due to the soft rear spring pack. Once that is fixed the extra width, shock valving, and general chassis dynamics pretty much made the trailer disappear. Easy driving, stable, enough power to be the first to arrive at the closest fuel stop... There is enough power available to pretty much drive whatever speed one desires up any pass one encounters. The only real limit is how much fuel you want to burn. The Ecoboost can give you "Eco" or "Boost", but not both at the same time. We crossed the Rockies twice, the Kootneys once, and several other ranges along the way. Could always go up faster than I wanted and could come down nice and slow. The Tow/Haul programming in the 10 Speed does a great job of holding speed. We averaged just under 11MPG on the trip. Set up like we are (Rebuilt spring pack and WD hitch) the trailer could easily be 6 feet longer and 2000 pounds heavier before I would feel the need for "More Truck".

Could towing be the reason for the pinion failure? Towing puts additional pressure on the pinion and slightly alters its position on the ring gear teeth. And it doesn’t take Carolina Squat angles to cause the problem. Btw, Carolina Squat with more than 4” of height difference front vs back is now illegal in TN, GA and funny enough NC, SC. While I prefer fewer laws over more laws, I support this one.

Anything is possible but it is not uncommon for pinion bearings to go bad on these trucks/axels. Add in a tune and a trailer and a large girlfriend sheet gets real fast. I had to do mine under warranty and I am NOT saying what I think caused it........ :Big Laugh:

The pinion whine was starting before we bought the trailer... I thought it was tire hum at first until it started getting progressively worse.
