Anything is possible but it is not uncommon for pinion bearings to go bad on these trucks/axels. Add in a tune and a trailer and a large girlfriend sheet gets real fast. I had to do mine under warranty and I am NOT saying what I think caused it........Could towing be the reason for the pinion failure? Towing puts additional pressure on the pinion and slightly alters its position on the ring gear teeth. And it doesn’t take Carolina Squat angles to cause the problem. Btw, Carolina Squat with more than 4” of height difference front vs back is now illegal in TN, GA and funny enough NC, SC. While I prefer fewer laws over more laws, I support this one.
The pinion whine was starting before we bought the trailer... I thought it was tire hum at first until it started getting progressively worse.Could towing be the reason for the pinion failure?
