Ok did the first oil change today. Thanks for all the tips in this thread. Didn't bother with drain bolt and all the associated mess reported here. Got a good 5.25 quarts right out of the dipstick with my mityvac. The oil filter was a major ****. Eventually got the ****** off with a long extension and my right angle impact. I used a mobil filter this time and just hand tightened it back on. I'm thinking either k&n filter next time (if they make one for our truck) since they have the nut at the end, or even doing the filter only every other oil change. Filter is a pita on this truck.

Truck is also way too low in front. I didn't want to do the leveling kit but seeing I can't even currently get underneath with a low profile creeper and scraping the front regularly while Wheeling last weekend, i have decided to do the rpg collars soon.

I'd recommend draining at least the last quart through the drain plug in the event of any possible sediment or filings to flush out. Likely not, but why not be sure.

Otherwise, I use the pneumatic version of the mityvac.

Yeah, I will go through once every 3-4 oil changes and drain via the drain bolt to get any sludge out. But in all the years and all the different cars I have used a mityvac on, as long as you are regular with oil changes and put in high quality oil, there is never any sludge built up anyway. Getting 80% of the oil out and replaced with fresh oil is more than good enough, if your change intervals are shorter than what modern synthetic oils can go for, anyway.

Are most people using fully synthetic? I'm assuming for $39.99 at the dealer, they aren't using that.

Also somewhat common at the dealer is they lose or strip your bolts, get in and out of your truck with dirty pants and keys in their back pockets on your ****** leather, and just use cheap oil and filter. I'm thinking Mobil 1 oil + filter done in my garage

Dealer should be using Motorcraft filter and Motorcraft Synthetic blend. They should be using the disposable seat covers and floor mats to protect the interior when working. If the lose any bolts, new ones are only a few steps away at the parts counter. All of the bolts they have to loosen for an oil change are threaded into captured nut/clips so if they strip them, again a replacement is only a few steps away.

Also who puts keys in their back pocket? That's pure communism.

Seriously though, the dealer oil change isn't that bad for $39.99. Not much they can mess up and it is mid grade quality. Not bad value for money.

Just did my first oil change at 1,900 miles. Went back with Royal Purple and a Purolater1. I plan to change it again at 5k, then every 5k after that so it's easy to keep track.

I used a Mityvac to pull the oil out because of you guys talking about the mess. I kept it going, while moving the tube around a bit, until nothing else would come out. Just for ***** and giggles, I pulled the drain plug to see how much was left. (That sucker is up in there, so I see where the trouble lies) All I got was a dribble.

From now on, I won't be pulling the plug, as it's SO easy to suck the oil, swap the filter, refill and go! Next time I'll be looking like a pit crew...:flipthebird:

Thanks for all the tips on the oil change process. I just changed mine at 3000 miles. I went back with 5 quarts of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W30 and K&N HP2011 Filter.
With all the cautions in the threads about the oil gusher, I used a funnel that I have on hand and held it in place below the oil plug as I eased out the plug. Sure enough it flows really fast, but I was able to catch every drop with the funnel directing it into my container.
I missed the part in the thread above about the filter oil coming through the square hole. That had me wondering where to heck the oil would drip out. Sure enough, it comes straight down through the center of that square hole. Someone at Ford put some though into that design. The factory filter was on pretty tight, but I used a band type wrench and got it off with no problem. The oil plug was a little harder to remove for me. I didn't want to used a wrench on the plastic plug. It took two hands to get it started turning, then it came out easily. It's tough to get two hands on it, though.
5 quarts for the refill was perfect.

Changed oil today because truck was 1 qt low on oil at 1960 miles and I had rather change it than add a quart. I checked the oil after I took delivery but not again until today. I also poured used oil back into container to measure and document it was 1 qt low.
Anybody else notice oil consumption?
I used Motorcraft filter and Mobil 1 full synthetic. I've had engines use oil until things get seated , hoping this is the case.
Nice tutorial it was useful.
