GEN 2 Engine making strange noise. Time for a rebuild?

Well, picked it up and didn’t even get 1/2 mile before it started doing it again. So I just dropped it back off and they will get back with me tomorrow since the “engine guy” already left for the day. They said they drove it for around 10-15 miles after the phaser replacement and it didn’t make any sound. Hard to believe.
This really sucks, hope it isn't something major inside the motor. Keep us posted. :(

Damn, that’s a shame. Fingers crossed for a quick repair.

Well it def is a pucker moment. They just called me and its new motor time. With new turbos and long block it will be 13k plus taxes. So around 14k. FML.
So they misdiagnosed it, threw parts at it, and now they want you to pay for a long block? What are they claiming as root cause? I would not recommend moving forward until they can show that the failure is unrelated to the work that they performed, something isn’t adding up here.

So they said that when it was cold started there was nothing really abnormal except for some cam phaser rattle. So they replaced it and im assuming they didn't even drive it but cold started it again. When the sound wasn't there they said it was fixed. When I drove it, it didn't start running rough or making noises until it got up to temp and I was rolling. When I returned it was still at temp so when I restarted it for the service advisor, the knock was still there.
When I talked to him this morning their "engine guy" said he has never heard an eco boost/(maybe raptor?) make this series of sounds before. Im going to call back and clarify though.


Im betting they are suggesting the long block because it would just be much easier than tearing it down to find out what is wrong.

I can't believe you are on the hook for this? Call Ford Customer service and have them send out somebody to investigate.

Well, it is Ford vehicle and the dealerships represent Ford in some manner, the cam phaser repairs are warrantied by Ford and not the dealer, so try and get Ford involved and maybe they will warrant a new motor for you or make the dealer pay for it. Another member just had his motor warranty approved by Ford. Maybe @FordTechOne can better explain it to you, than I can. It seems to be the process of choice when the dealer doesnt come through.

So stopped by the dealership to get a better understanding of what was wrong. So the story is the engine tech believes without tearing it down to confirm, it’s a main bearing. And they don’t tear down motors to just replace what wrong with high mileage motors as it’s too much of a liability. And with mine over 200k they suggest the long block.

Also was told the long block comes with a 3yr 100k mile warranty
