4wd pop and whining noise when in 2wd

It's not the real the axle shaft. It's a little piece at the end of it. I thought the exact same thing though

Mine does this poping in 4 wheel also.. no clue what it is and truthfully I say **** it because they can't figure it out so i'm just going to run it until something breaks.

You have a broken IWE. Your four wheel drive will not work when the system is under load, i.e. when you really need it.

So I was just out in one of our hay fields and decided to put it in 4x4 to build up speed, and noticed the front end popped whenever I gunned it and had the tires spin. How worried should I be, it seems normal when I am in 2wd or just driving normally in 4x4. And if I do take it in to the dealer what should I say.

Cracked IWE. If you don't care about having four wheel drive when you need it, then don't worry about it, but once it cracks and the teeth start to slip it only gets worse.

Take it to the dealer and explain what is happening. They probably will say nothing is wrong. You have to tell them it happens when the truck is under a load. Good luck.

It has been fixed many times. I suspect it will be broken again after the Havoc run.

Ive only had one IWE go in 30k miles. in a 2012

Would it be a reasonable approach to retrofit the pre 2012 diff,
if ford does not address the issue in 2014?
