Deep Thoughts by MajorAR*

The (IMHO) problem is that 'most' not all, Raptor owners are 'Type A' personality. They take pride in their Raptor for various reasons, weather it's the money, or hard work they have invested (or both)....or other reason. By definition, those type of people don't take criticism well and/or don't like to feel inferior to others. Therefore they feel they need to have best, and/or most popular, newest gadget out there to feel adequate or popular among other Raptor owners.

That's why I feel so many folks on the FRF get so butt hurt about what they have or don't have. It's about keeping up with the Joneses as they say.

Cheers and Merry Xmas all!

I am working on finding your unicorns. The information/opinions I post on here based on my own experience and facts from other people. I never post rumors or speculation. Sorry you will have to click on the links to see the pictures.

This covers the 3.0 issue. I wrote this 03/09/12 on the Z.

Let me start buy saying this is by no way written to discredit any business or individual. It is to be informative so nobody else runs into the same problem I did.

I installed my Kings prior to my trip down to Mexico for the San Felipe 250. I was planning on trying them out, doing some tuning on them and also chasing for a truck that was racing. On the first day out, I was running on some of the roads I know pretty well and thought the shocks were great on the big hits and whoops. However, the small bump compliance was very harsh. I was texting Mictouch and he was giving me advice on the best way to go about tuning the shocks. So on Friday I started to make some adjustments, the front is pretty straight forward, just turn a knob. Then I moved to the rear and find the damage. The compression tube had hit my SDHQ bump stop kit. Let me try to explain what happened. I have Deaver springs, the SDHQ bump stop kit and the relocated bump pad. The pad is bolted to the top of the leaf springs and then it is bolted to the axle with two bolts with a clamp around the bottom of the axle. The bottom clamp is where the problem is. One of the tubs on the Kings is longer and in a different location then on the other shocks. (Icon & Fox)

So at this time the damage was too severe for me to do any adjusting and I left the tuning for another day. I pulled off the lower clamp and ran the rest of the weekend with out it. (So as of this time I still do not have a review of the shocks)

When I got back to the states I contacted SDHQ and explained my problem and they asked I send them some pictures. I did and immediately received a call back from Ryan explaining they had never tested the bump stop kit with Kings and he would do whatever it takes to make it right. I live about 700 miles from their shop so taking my truck in was not an option. They made arrangements for one of their local customers with Kings to come in so they could mount their system and take a look. They determined there was a clearance problem and are currently making the needed modifications to their kit. They have made arrangements to have King repair my shocks and in the mean time sent me a pair of Icons to run. In my opinion they have gone above and beyond in customer service in resolving this issue. I can’t say enough good things about the way they have handled this and I am looking forward to the day I can shake Ryan and Jason’s hand in person and thank them.

I do not want to speak for anybody else on the forum. However, I was made aware over the weekend that due to clearance issues with the Kings, one of the other manufactures (not Outlaw) need to make modifications to their kit also.

Again this is just a heads up for everybody. Our trucks are new and so are the products being made for them. It’s hard for companies to test every possible combination out there. So now I am going to be very sure that I never take for granted an aftermarket part will work without checking everything for myself.

Hope this helps somebody out.

This was written by BlueSVT regarding my truck on 08/07/12 on the Z

Final step was to straighten his rear bump stop kit, which was bent a small amount when the lower bolt in the frame was either lost or sheared... hard to tell. Gordon drives very aggressively, so it's no surprise that these sort of issues are being found after a year or more of extreme abuse! We spent a good 10-15 minutes debating how we should go about attempting to straighten the kit, as these DO NOT bend easily!

A creative solution was devised, in which the unit was bolted to the lower axle... at that point the press was used to push "up" on the center of the bump stop cross member, which helped not only fix the bent angle of the cross bar and bump stop, but jacked up the truck while the bump stop was chained to the fixed axle... which helped add pressure and pulled it into place! New hardware was purchased and installed, and we were done:

This was the update written on 08/20/12

When Matt come up to Nor Cal to give me a hand a couple of weeks ago, one of the things we fixed was a bolt on my driver side SDHQ bump kit that had either fallen out or broke.

I have one of the original bump kits ever made. When I bent my frame SDHQ was the only company offering a bolt on solution to the problem. (Outlaw at the time was only doing a weld in kit) Since that time several companies have started producing kits and they are improving with every new style that comes out.

Jason from SDHQ saw the post and gave me a call the next day and wanted to know if there was a problem with their kit. I told him there was no way to tell what happened and it just looked like the hard use I put my truck through had caused the bolt to fall out or shear. (No fault of theirs)

He told me they had redesigned their bump kit and would send me out the new version to try. AS ALWAYS GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE SDHQ.

It was harder to pull the old kit out than it was to install the new kit. Very simple install and they have made some great improvements to it. Here is a picture of the old and new kits. As you can see the new kit fully wraps around the frame.

What was not covered was after the install of this kit my truck was found to have a bent frame for the second time. The decision was made to remove the bump kit and install a custom Outlaw weld on kit.

There is no way to straighten a frame by bolting a plate on the outside of it. It will pull it back into place. However, it will always be under load and is not the correct way to fix it.

I am hunting down the other unicorn and will post pics once its captured.
