CP312,

I run it all, never tripped a code on my 18. I did on my 13 a bunch. Still happens now.

txraptor,

I hear you on the cost/benefit analysis. And i agree. You do get added benefit for the exhaust by getting some better sound. The CAI is by far the least cost/benefit

Thanks RaptorFlipper. Firsthand experience is always appreciated.

So after reading this from a couple different tuners I’m curious. None seem to want to clear a CEL. I assume downpipes and maybe even an intake would trip a CEL correct? If so, what are people doing to get around that issue? It seems like the tuners only want people running the tune which is not similar to other platforms I’ve modified in the past.

Some intakes may cause a CEL, some don't. As wild as it sounds, the tolerances for the CEL are so tight that it can happen on one truck and not another. That said, aFe Power does have a piece that can be added inside their intakes if a code is thrown that will eliminate the code.

Some downpipes cause CEL, some don't.

For example:
SPD Turbo Adapters and stock downpipes - No CEL
SPD Turbo Adapters and SPD catted downpipes - No CEL
Stock Turbo Adapters and Kooks Downpipes - No CEL
SPD Turbo Adapters and Kooks Downpipes - CEL
Stainless Works Downpipes - CEL
aFe Power Downpipes - 50/50 CEL

ALL CATLESS downpipes will cause a CEL.

Methods to eliminate a CEL are tuning or O2 extenders which are available on Amazon.

Thanks for the information.

Stock Turbo Adapters and Kooks Downpipes - No CEL
SPD Turbo Adapters and Kooks Downpipes - CEL
From this list it looks like SPD designed their catted downpipes to work together with their turbo adapters. Pity they are not stainless steel, only aluminized.

$699 for 92 HP from MPT tune is very good! ($7.60 per HP)
$400 (installed) for 24 HP from SPD TA is OK ($16.67 per HP)

Possible CEL issues from these two:
$1300-1500 (installed) for 40 HP from catted DPs is expensive ($32.5 per HP)
$400 for 10 HP from CAI is very expensive ($40 per HP)

I went with the first two and skipped the second two.

Did you install the adapters and tune at the same time or one before the other?

Noticeable gain with each added?

Thanks.

I added a Roush CAI. (No CEL) I noticed the difference in power but it’s very small. Sound from under the hood is definitely different.

Would not have done it if the Whipple tune (any day now) wasn’t the next step.

I did all of my work at the same time, including a Full Race IC, Flowmaster FlowFX muffler, SP-542 spark plugs and a 170 degree t-stat. The difference is dramatic (100+ HP) at all speeds and has been completely drama-free. (No CELs, no stumbling, no hesitation, no hard shifts, no excessive heat, etc.)

I highly recommend similar upgrades for others who want to really wake up their Gen 2s.

See the build thread in my signature for the details on the rest...

The SPD catted downpipes have a higher cell count (400 vs 200-300) so they are not as free flowing as the others. This means their HP gains are less and as you pointed out, they are not SS. I considered going with them because they are the cheapest option which puts them higher on the cost/performance line, but in the end I decided to stick with the factory downpipes.

I have the MPT 93PRX tune and was looking at adding the SPD turbo adaptors. Do I have to get the SPD Stud Extractor in order to have them installed by a professional. My truck is a 2018 with approx. 3K miles.

also whats the install like on this...is this a quick install...how much estimate for a pro to do it?
