This^^^^ would be my assent of the truck. The ring was fine when you left the dealer.. I would almost bet money on that. It broke on the drive home. I have seen it before.... mostly in Boats engines.

The ring becomes stuck to the wall each time it passes the spot on the wall it receives a little more damage. next thing you know you are fogging for mosquitoes.
The owner of the dealership said they drove that truck for 500-800 miles before they listed it, I highly doubt they didn’t experience the chimney smoke show from the exhaust. Not to mention as I walked with the salesman to go look at the truck he told me to just wait and he would bring the truck over to me. I don’t think that was a coincidence.

yeah its not a ring issue.. its a valve seal/valve guide issue thats allowing oil to get in the cylinder when the engine is off..

normally not a big deal, but overhead cams greatly complicate the repair.

drive, park, restart, big cloud of smoke.. upper engine issue..

possible but..... so is what I said. It took 100+ hours on my Buddys boat to show up. was fine the entire summer by the fall it was a smoke show. I got the boat for free it had sat for a couple of years with outdrive problems. I fixed the outdrive gave him the boat as a gift. (he is always helping me with projects) we pulled it apart that winter ran a hone through the cylinders ringed the pistons. had the boat 7 years. sold it and bought a 33FT cruiser.

A similar situation with one I bought for my self, The boat sat for a long time some kid bought it got it running drove it around for a short time I bought it from him by the end if the summer. smoke show. I completely rebuilt that one.(of corse it was mine.)had that boat 10 years. sitting is hard on an engine.

but it could be the way you say also. Just informing of MY past experiences.

That would be great if I could do without a vehicle for weeks. This dealer would be looking for the cheapest option possible because they are footing the bill.
Ford reman be their best /reliable option . I'm sure they get a break on the price and can eat the labor for their mechanic to install . Tell them to call you when it's done . Sounds like truck is in great shape . Anything mechanical can fail at anytime. Reman engine would come with a warranty. Have them change all the fluids . Buy your extended warranty that covers rentals . Sounds like a solid truck besides this incident. What did the Oasis report show for history on this truck?

I should preface that this is not a Ford dealership, and they specifically requested to have me not take it to a Ford dealership as they thought they would try to rip them off in labor and diagnostics

So... the valve seals dry out after sitting for long periods? "a guy I know" has had an engine sitting for a long time, sure don't want to see it go bad when it starts up.
