Weight is not the only consideration either for mpg's...rolling resistance will have a huge effect. saw on Tire Rack where they ran a BMW with various tire/wheel combos. The lightweight setup did worse than a heavier combo with some eco type tread pattern. I'm guessing a lot of these aggressive off road tread patterns would probably totally suck in the rolling resistance column.

I completely agree. The more aggressive the tread, the higher the rolling resistence.

We can add other parameters as this thing matures.

Nittos are a little hard to find the weight on. I found two articles that said..

NITTO TRAIL GRAPPLER M/T - 35x12.50R17 - one said 78lbs one said 79lbs

Toyo list the Open Country M/T in same size at - 82.7lbs

Those are some serious heavyweights, and the two tires I was deciding on, may not now.

War - feel free to add those to your OP, thanks for the great thread. Lets definitely get one going on wheels too.
Ive also noticed that what manufacturers list on their websites can very a few pounds from what places like tire rack list.

Some manufactures like Kumho offer the Road Venture MT KL71 in a 35x12.5R17 - 75lbs(tire rack) - 75.7lbs(Kumho) and the 315/70R17 is 73lbs(tire rack) - 71.8lbs(Kumho). they are pretty much identical tires but you can save a few lbs by going with the 315.

What would be sweet is if we could get ppl who have tires that are not mounted yet to post a pic of them on a scale.

Thanks! Updated.

edit: I verified your weights with the manufacturer

One of the Off-Road rags just did a shootout on mud tires. I will post up their weights this evening. One thing I found interesting was that they weighed all 4 tires of the set before mounting. Some of the brands had a large variance in weight within the 4 tires tested. Some were like 6-8 pounds difference between the same brand, size, and model of tires. Others were less than a pound.

The April issue of FourWheeler had an extensive mud tire test. Here are their weights. All tires tested were 37-12.50-17's. Obviously going to be heavier than a 35" version of the same tire. At least it gives an idea of what to expect.

Maxxis M8060 Trepador:
78lbs, 78.4, 78.7, 76.2

Pro Comp Xtreme Mud Terrain
82lbs, 81.4, 81.6, 83.2

BFG Mud Terrain T/A KM2
68.4lbs, 68.4, 68.2, 67

Super Swamper TrXus MT
77.2lbs, 76.2, 79.2, 76.2

Pitbull Rocker LT
77.2lbs, 76.2, 79.2, 76.2

Yokohama Geolander M/T
76.2lbs, 75.8, 73, 77.8

Nitto Trail Grappler M/T
81.6lbs, 82.6, 80.2, 81.6

Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ
82lbs, 88, 89.8, 87.4

Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar
76.2lbs, 75.4, 75.2, 73.6

Hankook Dynapro MT
90.6lbs, 84.2, 84.6, 87.4

As others have mentioned, unsprung weight and rotating mass are the most critical areas to shave weight. The suspension will work smoother, quicker acceleration, improved braking, and better fuel economy. Add 10lbs per corner and you can easily lose 1-2mpg. Lose 10lbs and see you 0-60 time improve as well as your 60-0. If you go with a real agressive tread you will likely lose mpg's do to the added rolling resistance. If the tread pattern has big voids between the tread lugs it's going to hurt your mpg. In building race cars our formula was that every pound of unsprung weight removed was equal to removing 20 pounds of sprung weight.

Thanks SB, great info! What'd they say about the bfg MT's? I'm thinking about getting a set for when I go play in the mud.

Just doing some research on the TOYO A/T's... I'm looking to buy some 18's so they're 66lbs... However for the purpose of the sticky... The LT325/70R17 which is (35X13.0R17) weights in at 77lbs each. My source is the TOYO site.

The BFG's surprisingly finished 8th out of 10 tested. The order of the list I posted is from last to first in the test results.

Crap. May have to rethink. These (KM2's) are not the same BFG MT's that I've had in the past and I guess they've lost some of what used to set them apart in the mud.

Funny thing is I've had the Goodyears and HATED them.
