Some of us do "need" 4WD, I don't live near a desert and I open it up everychance I get, but there are times I hit trails that require much slower speeds. I really wish I didn't "need" 4wd though lol

Its all up to the end user and their wants/needs. Some people buy and mod these trucks to make them into purpose built desert trucks. Others use them as a multi purpose truck. There's no right or wrong way to make these trucks awesome.
A 2wd kit gives you the max amount of travel due to not having axles to worry about binding.
