Sunroof leaks?

Hey guys. Happy New Year! I'm just getting things together right now and had questions about the sunroofs. My plan is to get the 802A package, but am nervous about the sunroof. I'm the type of guys who keeps his trucks and am worried about leaks in the long run. I have no problem not getting one, but If I find a deal and it has it, should I get it? How many of you had leaks or have friends with leaks? Thanks

Don’t get me wrong, Lucille has been great, but I wouldn’t get the moon roof again.

1) Ford chose cheap, not inexpensive, cheap plastic parts for the track guides and lift mechanism. When the glass sticks, as in when you don’t open it for a few weeks, the the motor easily breaks pieces off the track guides and mechanism, and renders the moon roof inoperable, often in the open position, until you can clear the track of the debris. The repair kit for this and the repair is 4 figures to start, so once you’re out of warranty, you’ll hate this thing quick.

2) This is the noisiest sun/moon roof I’ve heard; as in, it rattles like crazy over the smallest of bumps. I’ll say this- it wasn’t noisy from the factory, but once it broke and the shop mechanics replaced the mechanism, it’s made noise ever since.

3) Yes, they leak and leak profusely, but if the track drains are clear, you won’t notice unless you’re looking for it. I don’t know how much a new, off the line truck moon roof leaks into the track, but the replacement I got has at least 4 different points of leakage --that I can see-- from the back.

Now for the bad news.
Ford apparently only provides dealers 802A trucks with the moon roof unless it’s ordered without one. I haven’t found a ’20 802a without one. I’m sure they exist, but they’re about as rare as a ’69 427 Camaro.

When you’re looking at that beautiful vista through the moon roof, just think to yourself: “in 4 years, I’ll be spending about $1700 to fix this”

I’ve had an 18 and now a 19 and have had no leaks and I don't know of anyone personally that has had one. People on the board have has some issues from time to time.

I don’t have he same experience with rattles that smurf has. Not sure what year his rig is but IIRC it was a 17 built in 16 so they may have worked out the issues by now ( fingers crossed)

the only thing I noticed on the 18 was the fixed panel wasn’t quite level with the moving piece. It didn’t leak but water would puddle there as it was low on the drive side where the 2 panels joined. Give it a good once over when you look at the truck to make sure it’s level(ish)

like smurf said, I too have never seen an 802A without it on dealer lot.

I was in same boat heard about sunroof issues but near impossible to find a truck w/ what I wanted that DIDNT have the roof. I wound up opting for 100k extended warranty & that was a big reason- BUT 1 year & 19k miles in & no issues. Knowing they could be quirky I just relegated myself to the following- NEVER “1 touch slide open” the roof for the first time you open it after sitting any length of time ESPECIALLY during swings in temp/weather/humidity- the initial “drop down” movement of the front panel after trucks been sitting for a while is what causes damage after the panels get kinda “stuck together” due to aforementioned weather fluctuations. If you religiously “pop up” vent the roof FIRST before ever doing the slide back function I think you’ll avoid 90% of any potential mechanical part failure. Once I’ve done this one time tho if it’s like an hour or 2 later & been driving around I may open it the other way.

The other thing is basically every 4-6 months I inspect the roof seals/track clean it up a bit & lube seals w/ krytox grease. Make sure to clean the metal section in front portion of roof w/ alcohol.

We had a 2014 explorer sport with the pano roof.....it was awesome for 5 years and 100k miles. our 2018 explorer sport has a pano roof and it is again awesome.

on a nice spring or fall day, opening up the roof on the raptor for my commute home, with the music blasting is just relaxing as hell to me. it is a must have.

I agree, my 2018 is my second F150 with the pano-moon roof - I open mine on a regular basis.
I've never had a leak or had issues with either one closing.

Have it on my 2014 with 60K and never a problem....Love it...I wouldnt NOT buy a Raptor you found and like just because it had one.Got to remember,most guys on ANY forum will write about their BAD experiences...not many decide one morning,wow,my sunroof works great,let me write about it...IMHO,seems most go bad with the guys who are doing hard core off-roading which makes sense with all the bumping around....but if its going to be more of a daily driver,highway use...I'd go for it...

The roof is the feature passengers appreciate most when I take people off-road in the mountains. Namely those in the backseat. Have yet to have any issues on my '18. The only time I would not get a roof is if I lived near the desert and planned to run high speed on a regular basis. It would be unnecessary and extra weight up top. I keep a close eye on the roof mechanics thanks to those who post about issues.

One piece of Ford engineering I appreciate about the roof is how they determined the perfect stop point when you hit the open button. It will open further if you hit the button a second time, but you'll be forced to enjoy mad wind/air-vacuum sounds.

I have a 17 with a moonroof.
I open it 90% of the time I go someplace. It has not leaked in the snow or rain.

The damn rattling(only when closed) on the other hand, I do have. Somebody on here posted a video for a fix, which I have not yet done.

My 18 has been taken in three or four times for leaks from the sunroof on the drivers side. Last week we got a new leak on the passenger side. I’ve owned 4 raptors and the last one I ordered that came in this past week was bought without a moonroof. Never again will I order one with a moonroof.
