The lock on the ground does not look damaged...?
was it installed properly, or was the lock picked?
Did you have the key in the cab?

If you get the masterlock, I recommend not using the velcro it comes with. It doesn't stick well in high temps. It got loose and the lock ended up scratching my paint. Now using industrial mounting tape and it's been holding strong.

I didn't lock my tailgate, masterlocks description sounded so good...that's why I bought it. I use my tailgate all day and I usually lock it a night but your bound to forget a couple times.

According to my insurance they can easily punch the stock lock and take it to. I am surprised at the cost if the tailgate and how few thefts there are.

The tire gate would take forever to unbolt and trying to carry with a tire I would hope it would be less valuable to thief's

Question now is who are these people and will the come back...I can't hide in fear forever, I need to carry my spare tire but I guarantee a rope lock would get cut in a heartbeat....

What to do in my shoes?
i have the tailgate pinned and a smart phone notification on my phone so when my alalrm goes off i will know right away if my truck is being messed with. and if its at my shop or my house, i have things that go "bang"

That McGard thing looks pretty good. It won't scratch the paint for sure. What about this one from a previous poster? Truck Security Tailgate Security
Depending on the type of bolt it uses, this looks like the cleanest of all the tailgate security systems out there. Other than alarms and guns of course. What think everyone else?

That's the one I have, The Gate Keeper. It use the bolt that is already there. Very simple.

The spare tire is super easy to steal. There's a small C clip on the back side of the lock, pop that off and the whole assembly falls apart. Unless your Noah and you put alarm triggers all over your truck, nothing is safe. They do sell locks for this as well: Spare Tire Locks

Can't that bolt just be easily backed out if the thief brings the right tool then? Unless its some weird ass fitting? That gatekeeper thing I mean. I'm not as worried about the spare right now.

Dag Joker, that Defender looks very heavy duty. Might have to check that out again when it becomes available.

It takes a really big Torx and way more time than a thief would want to spend.

MasterLock only states that it "prevents" theft. I personally had a Bully brand but it scratched into the paint because it was all metal, like the Masterlock. I ended up going with McGard because it was metal but with a plastic sleeve and it hasn't harmed the paint for the last year. But even that one only "prevents"

Tailgate Lock

Tailgates with a camera I heard cost around $2200 to replace. I personally would start looking on Craigslist, might get lucky and yours will be on there. I let you think of what can happen next....

I just had a tail gate messed up by an employee. Long story short, I am at $1800 for a replacement, but that does not include a new step, handle or camera. My guess is, a new tailgate is closer to $3000.

Looks like the Gatekeeper can be easily removed with a Torx and the McGard all the thief would have to do is purchase one and then he has the key for everyones lock.
