I'm a little over 5 hours from Deadwood and the Red Desert starts just south of me a ways.
How do you describe that area. Wow! Open, desolate, very few people with widely varying terrain depending on the road chosen. I personally have not strayed from from the high speed roads you see in the first post. There is plenty of terrain out there but depending on the weather, you can get in serious trouble if it rains (and your on a more remote two track). Extremely slick and sometimes bottomless mud. This outing would be more higher speed dirt roads with some varied terrain and a few hills/passes to climb. The area is remote with very little if any vehicles most of the time until you get close to one of the two lane highways. I'm still planning out the route but I have a general idea for a two day full outing with an option for a day 0 evening short run. I mentioned the Killpecker Dune field as just a small part of the trip and not as a destination unto itself. Maybe a 1-2 hour break with an option to get on the dunes for those interested. I have not hit them myself yet as I'm always alone out there. I would call this trip as an outing to see some Wyoming wildness, hit the historic gold rush area of South Pass City, hit the Farson Mercantile for ice cream and just give our trucks a chance to air out as much as you'd like and are comfortable with. I generally cruise much of the area in the 50-70 mph range. You could certainly drive faster but I'm still just getting used to the area and enjoying the remoteness. Future runs could be more challenging and explore more off the beaten path. Just know that this area is wild with limited cell coverage and a rainstorm can make it interesting in short notice. I may have to get a sat phone just for these kinds of outings.
Did I scare anyone off yet lol!
For those that are still interested, does it make a big difference if it's say a Friday afternoon through Sunday type outing or one that runs sometime in the Monday through Friday period. (Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday through Thursday for example).
