Yes, you have to take the complete mirror assembly apart, the mirror itsel is the hardest part, once that's off, it's about a 5 minute job.

I didn't really look lose enough to see if they could be taken apart, looked to be sealed, perhaps they could be heated like the headlights to separate.

This mod is not rocket science. It isn't even hard. But, we have members on here who don't own their own screwdriver, or if they do, they aren't sure which end to use and this is for them. Also, I wanted pics and part numbers in the same place for reference.
I ordered my parts from Tousleyfordparts.com Easy ordering and shipping was reasonable to AK.

Here are the part numbers you need:

Yes, they are different from right to left:

Use a non-marring pry tool or at least something wrapped in tape or you will scar up your mirrors for sure. The mirror plastic is very soft. Take your time and start from the outside where the retainer nub is:

The new ones just slip in on the inside of the mirror first then snap in place. Pretty easy and really changes the look of the truck from the front. I didn't realize how distracting the orange reflectors were until they weren't there any more!

The one and only thing that's been buggin me about my blk scab is those damn mirror reflectors. The black inserts are just the ticket and I just ordered them!
Thanks for the thread!!

thanks for suggesting these. seems kinda pricey for a couple pieces of plastic, and they dont seem to fit as well as the reflectors, but looks much better

So these are the parts for 2012 F-150s that aren't Raptors. I'm sure they'll fit. For $30 I'll chance it. I hate the reflectors.
