I don't recall any Ford Rep ever admitting to the Raptor R with a V8

I have to believe they left the motor alone in the Gen 3 for a few reasons. One major one was the team got the go ahead for the R. And that could be the only direct power competition to the TRX.

Still think they should have taken the Gen 3 to 500HP. Marketing wise they would have sold even more even faster. I don’t think most people buy new vehicles truly based on how much power will it have if I tune. It’s more the after thought and many know they can.

I don't think the timing works out for that. The Gen 3 started design when? 2018 maybe? I don't know a ton about the development process, but if they could do it faster than that, I think we would be seeing the Raptor R very soon. When did Ford know that the TRX existed and wasn't just going to be a concept, but something they needed to compete against? Probably mid 2020 at the earliest.

So what's more likely, the Gen 3 designed focused on the exhaust, suspension, and cosmetic changes, or, the Gen 3 did originally have more HP, but they removed them once they found out about the TRX...for some reason? The former seems more likely to me, and Ford is bringing out the R as a reaction to TRX only.

I suppose it's possible that an HP bump for the 3.5 TT engine was played for mid gen release...saving something for later. IMO, and just a guess that people who know more than me disagree with, but Ford wants to to a mid gen release of hybrid....if it sells well on the F150. if they had bumped the HP to 500 now, the hybrid would have to beat that. Leaving it at 450, the hybrid only has to do better than that.

It was mentioned in the Gen3 release on Feb 3. They buried it at the end of two different paragraphs within the article.

Got it thanks! I will post the little blurb so others don’t have to siphon through it:
“The 2021 F-150 Raptor will be assembled at Ford’s Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Michigan, and available in showrooms this summer. Raptor R is coming next year.”

I can basically agree with Ford would have stayed with the 3.5TT if the TRX was never born. Ecoboost is what Ford does and the changes to the truck would have moved it that much further above the rest of the crowd. Yes maybe it would have got the power bump too. But now that bump is not a whole lot compared to the TRX, so just save it for the R.

I bet if your a major truck or Raptor fan it’s an interesting story that must have went on behind the scenes.

I have to believe the TRX did throw some type of monkey wrench into the whole plan.

Did you and @melvimbe ever decipher the license plate from the reveal? Wasn’t this the key to the whole thing about the R?

Hard to imagine Ford was planning a SC V8 in the Raptor's future.

I did what now? I don't recall what you're talking about, but I probably did. I do recall trying to figure out what a date on the wall calendar meant on the reveal, but don't recall looking at the license plate.
