I hesitantly took the truck in for the first service since complementary. Although I normally do all service myself, I figured it might be good to let them go through everything just to make sure everything is still good from the factory.

Apparently, my hesitation was justified when I got my truck back drenched in oil all over the bottom and the entirety of my front passenger wheel well and suspension parts (likely due to the drop angle from the lift). I know these things can make a mess, but it is on the service department to at least clean up after themselves if they aren’t creative enough to minimize the mess.

Although the oil was a disappointment, the real problem was that they cross-threaded 2 of the bolts and clips for the skid plate access panel. While looking under the truck, I could easily see them skewed and not properly seated to the panel. When looking at the opposite side, I could see the clips bent and cross-threaded. They obviously pushed in and torqued them down with power tools without first threading them by hand to start correctly.

I’m having them replace the bolts and clips, but I’m putting them in. I already re-threaded the ones I have to get by while I wait for the parts to come in. I’m also not letting them touch anything else, since I need to remove the skid plates to clean up the mess. I can only imagine what else they could screw up.

I should have trusted my gut and not took it in to begin with.

Welcome to most dealerships. Find you a good independent for your maintenance. My ram was the same thing- oil all over the axle and steering/stained my driveway. WTF have some pride in your work.

Good advice, I have a local quick oil change place filled with people who care about your vehicle. Every time I go in they go the extra mile and they are super fast. They also have a ton of brands for oil.

Yeah...first and last time they'll be seeing it as long as no warranty work. I prefer to do all my own maintenance anyway.

But the other thing I know is the average age of a car in this country is nearly 12 years. An impressive stats like that makes it reasonable to assume around half of the cars on the road have more than 100k miles on them.
[...]
Either the average American is far more responsible than I give them credit for, or oil is a lot more durable than some people in this thread believe.

Or, cars aren't being driven as much, so today's 12 year-old car has fewer miles on it than a 12 year-old car 30 years ago?

And, no one says those cars are in great running condition. Just because it runs doesn't mean it's running well and is reliable. But that's personal preference. I know some folks who are just fine with adding a quart of oil in the motor every month.

Hey, it's your truck, do what you want!

  • If you want low maintenance and don't plan on keeping it a long time, just follow the OLM and you'll be fine.
  • If you want low maintenance and plan on keeping it a long time, go ahead and follow the OLM, but also plan on some possible (NOT probable, just possible) engine work late in the truck's life if poor performance or oil consumption bothers you.
  • If you want to keep the truck a long time, and you want to optimize performance and reliability, then you may want to investigate a more aggressive maintenance schedule, or one informed by used oil analysis.

OK RAPTOR Peeps ---- changed oil - Truck flat when I drained the old oil. New filter/ put first 5 quarts in an checked the oil level, it was reading top of the fill line. Ran the truck a bit, let er sit checked again an the level was the same - I thought well damn I left a quart of oil in there when I drained it BUT the oil on the stick looks like its straight out of the jug.

Thoughts / suggestions / If I left a quart in it an I quite possibly did how do you get all 6 quarts out of it.

Thanks Peeps --- My first oil change

I run the front up onto a couple 2" x 8" boards, 1-1/2 inches higher than rear tires. Drain and replace filter, add 6 quarts. Always at the full line when done.

My first oil change was full synthetic and done at the dealer at 10K miles (free). Second done at 20K miles (Mobile 1). Third at 30k miles with AMSOIL. Lather, rinse, repeat, every 10K miles. More often than that is just a waste of money.

Depends on vehicle use and climate. Stop and go, towing, extreme cold or heat will change the OCI.

Run front drivers side up on a board, but leave passenger side on pavement. the drain is on passenger side rear corner of the pan. So raising the front drivers side ever so slightly will improve the drain.

If not, you can literally let the thing drain for over an hour before it all comes out. you should be able to put 6 in and still be just below the top of the line.
