Hey everyone, I thought I would share my experiences as well.
2017 Raptor : build was Feb 2017
First oil change at 3k and used Amsoil + Filter
Im at 30k now. Lightly driven and hard occasionally because she's my road queen and IDGAF what other's say. The only dirt she sees is during hunting season.
I have a tiny rattle upon start up. At first, was told it was waste gates cycling. Drove 2 years with it. Did not affect performance. Never had an issue with my truck. Never got worse.
I took my raptor in two days ago to check that rattle again. They returned and said there was no issue. All I can do now is watch and see what happens and if it gets worse. The thing I really wanted to share was that I was told that OEM filter and blended synthetic oil was key for these engines. The oil ford uses with their filters have been tested with these trucks. He also told me that Ford specifically says no amsoil. Reason being is because of different oils produce different pressures. Some not enough, some too much. There has to be the right amount of pressure for the oil guides to work properly. I asked them to do an oil change and use the blended synthetic they recommend and a regular ford oil filter. (He said ford performance is not needed). I will see if the oil change will reduce or worsen my noise. And to repeat what other's have said, it's better to use ford oem parts so down the line when you have a warranty issue, there's no reason for them to turn you down. They might just want to make extra money to tell me all this and scare me away from amsoil, but I am also a believer in using OEM and engineered specific products. Saves me money too. I'll update what I hear tomorrow.
Ford semi blend oil is absolutely horrible. The low or none existent additives required for heavy duty forced induction direct injection engines is horrible for the engine.
Ford doesn’t like 300k mile trucks and if they could make you buy new trucks at 100-120k they would probably force people. Laws don’t allow them to make people so they will not spend money to help them lose money. Not a smart idea.
These engines actually hate ford oil (specifically blended shmoo) and the viscosity at elevated temps yeah, there isn’t any. 90-100% of tear downs we do, if the customer ran factory oil, it is completely burned and baked on everything. The inside of engine at 10-50,000 miles is disgusting and burnt while we tear down customers built 100k engine to refresh the inside of the motor is spotless, zero oil staining in castings or parts. Not saying look at us or it’s because of us its this clean. We just care about engines we build and customers so oil isn’t an optional Budget cut for me.
When the proper oil is used and changed by customers long term, the engines look new inside for years. Sooo important
It is incredible what a proper sized oil cooler does and how much help and less wear and baked on spam we find in the engines. Oem oil coolers are a garbage item. One time use as well. Remove it’s replaced not reused!! Recycle for some not garbage. Oem cooler It’s small! She said anyway [emoji20]. Haha
About 40,000 BTU of cooling is needed for average running trucks not heavy off-roading even. 21 row double pass thru cooler is what we will use on street guys or parking lot pimping mall crawlers. Real use, totally new game, but oil temp is so critical.
Although oem oil filters are ok, if you race or rip in Arizona Texas Cali Baja or use it like you stole it, grab a race filter with same bypass and anti drainback. Like 100% more filtration and media so why not?
While I will confirm that Amsoil is good, this posts crazy long and if you like amsoil run a good viscosity not 5w30 in June July aug or 0w40. Also check pressure first time maybe adjustments to oil will be needed and won’t do damage to a thing
Regarding oil pressure comment. Winter, summer, fall morning or 230 pm, geographically where you live and temps and weather. All effect what oil should be used. And when too. My Canadian customers run 5w40 while Australian or Texan I spec to 5w50. Not one oil is right. One is right for you Though to benefit you where you live
Just sharing experience is all.
I do not think any business but ours relies on use of not good but top grade oil. I need engines working proper while ford needs service
Motorcraft semi syn oil will almost certainly promote long term and immediate accelerated wear, early failure possible, and the life or longevity of the engine as whole or specific + costly important internal parts like timing components will be significantly killed and have a reduced life. No good, dying early isn’t good, raptor fun, long time. Way cooler
Pic one- 20,000 miles and done. TBN was almost nothing when lab tested oil. These photos are of a clean engine not that bad too. Shmooo is shmoooo and shmoooo doesn’t form wedge on bearings, flow in and out vct solenoids and is really really bad.
Use this oil save trying several types
Lubrication engineers
Monolec 5w40
Gas and diesel specialty oil. All I will say, big increase in quality of this oil VS 99.9% of them all with one exception and that one is I think $29 per quart and I like a heavy wallet so no thanks. Try it, you will not regret doing anything better then you did prior in life or in the use of engine oil game. [emoji23]
Lastly disclosure: I have No skin in oil game, don’t like paying for oil but have to use the best for customers. if you run Pepsi it’s your truck, just sharing experience we have and results. 300 analysis later ^^^ is best by far^^^
