Brake Squeal at Low Speed and Some Questions

At 33k miles I have a low speed squeal coming from the rear brakes. Initially thought it was the front and pulled both the front wheels and calipers. Lots of pad left, I'd say 60-70%. So it's the rears. They only make noise at low speeds, like below 5mph. Sometimes it makes no noise whatsoever. No rotor scoring at all. Anyone else have this issue? I'll need to put it in brake maintenance mode and pop the rears off to check the pads. Seems pretty odd for the fronts to have that much pad and the rears to be worn out, no?

Also, are the rear caliper pistons on these the screw-in type or compression? Thanks in advance!

Its not uncommon for the rear brake pads to wear out before the front on modern vehicles. The brakes are proportioned electronically, so the rears contribute more to maintain balance.

Once in brake maintenance mode, the rear caliper pistons just need to be compressed. No need to turn the piston.

Its not uncommon for the rear brake pads to wear out before the front on modern vehicles. The brakes are proportioned electronically, so the rears contribute more to maintain balance.

Once in brake maintenance mode, the rear caliper pistons just need to be compressed. No need to turn the piston.

Do you have any idea what these "shields" are for? I bought new FoMoCo pads and they didn't come with them. The coating was coming off so I didn't reuse them. They did come with new clips and caliper bolts. :cool:

Also, seems as if there is a protective padding glued to the outside but they're different. One is slotted (see pic) and I used that one for the inside where the piston makes contact. Hope that's right...but they're quiet now.

The shims are most likely there to just dampen brake noise, hence the coating that is peeling. It shouldn’t be necessary to reuse them with the new pads.

Greasing the back of the pad can help them stick to the piston and stop rattles and squeals too.

I just had my rears done by the dealer when they swapped my phasers. It was like 265 with them cutting the rotors . It was so cheap i was like screw it…especially with the epark brake… 42k on my rear pads… same symptom, squeak under 5mph… funny enough, fronts still have 9mm left… so same as you.

I just had my rears done by the dealer when they swapped my phasers. It was like 265 with them cutting the rotors . It was so cheap i was like screw it…especially with the epark brake… 42k on my rear pads… same symptom, squeak under 5mph… funny enough, fronts still have 9mm left… so same as you.

Fortunately this was not a difficult job at all. I think the hardest part was getting it into maintenance mode since it kind of requires a rhythm with the key on/off sequence. Otherwise, $96 all in with the pads and an hour of my time. $8 caliper compression tool from Harbor Freight helped. Rotors were fine but I bet in 1k miles they wouldn't have been considering how close to metal these things were.

I didn't have any brake grease here unfortunately.
