They warn you about charging a agm battery with too high an output, as battery is sealed. Most hydro chargers have an agm setting. With the old lead acid battery you had to sort of match your alternator to your battery size. Too small a battery and too big an alternator shortened the life of the battery. Or so it seamed. So that is why I was asking

Interesting. Perhaps there is a phenomenon going on that I'm not aware of.

It is the regulator that decides when to charge and how much to charge. Just make sure you have the right regulator for the battery.

generally a high output alternator wont do anything to your battery because it is going through the voltage regulator/rectifier. connecting a charger straight to the battery bypasses that so too high of a charge can damage your battery

The regulator senses what charge the battery needs and adjust accordingly, up to it's maximum. Wire the winch directly to the battery and you will be OK. Use the appropriate wire size.

That is really good to know,by the time I need a new alternator they will probably have one

Don't forget your winch has a circuit breaker. I tried to winch myself out of a river bottom and immediately blew the breaker. Wouldn't have gotten out without a snatch block to double the pull and reduce the load on the winch. Battery wasn't a problem.

I thought of that too. I'm considering going with a 400A fuse instead and keeping a few extras in the truck. I also have a snatch block.
