Well, best of luck. Best time to buy a Raptor is when it's right in front of you.

One thing to keep in mind. Right or wrong, there are people here and everywhere that paid over MSRP on Raptors, like waaaay over. Then there are those that bought in the 3-4 month sweet spot last year when nobody knew what was gonna happen in the world. Many of those guys seemed to get 6k or more off MSRP.

Only those people that bragged about the good deals know if they got reamed on their trade in though, it's not something someone would likely share while boasting about raking the dealer over the coals during negotiations. lol.

All that is to say, find one you like and jump on it. The target is always moving, but I doubt prices are going to go down on anything, from here on out. And if you do buy a '17, take comfort in the likely fact that it probably originally sold for way over MSRP.


Good point. And to MarkM98: everyone will brag about finding a great deal, but in the end it's subjective. If you really want the truck that badly, you're willing to spend over MSRP or what the going-rate for used is at the time in order to make that truck happen for you. If the inventory was huge, we could shop around and haggle over deals. It's not. You're going to pay a little more to make it happen in the timeline you want. In the end, was it worth the money to you? (My guess is it will be.)

Bought in June 2020 and got about $7k off MSRP. Truck was a new 19 that had been sitting on the lot for about 10 months. Had no idea I was timing the market perfectly. Dumb luck.

I found a 2018 Raptor that's not too far from me with 51,000 miles and its priced decently. Im going to go take a look at it tomorrow morning, but I first wanted to ask here if anyone has ran into this before. This yellow tag is in the door jam right above the vehicle white sticker. I take it that what ever was wrong with the truck has been fixed by Ford and looks to have a warranty with it. Im going to confirm this on my visit tomorrow. I was just hoping to see if anyone has any advice here first. The truck appears stock and I take that as a good sign. Im going to ask about the Cam Phasers and transmission. I also plan on looking at how the oil pan looks too.

That is a “Scarlet Letter”, required by law in some states indicating to any future purchaser that the vehicle was subject to a buy back. The text isn’t the clearest, but it appears to be a mandatory legal notice. Some states mark the vehicle title, here it appears they require marking the vehicle.

While I have no doubt that someone will eventually purchase it, discriminating buyers will RUN, not walk, to the nearest exit.

I test drove this 2018 today. It’s not bad at all. In normal mode it shifts really nice. In sport mode it shifts firm and the 4-5 shift is kind of hard, but nothing like the very noticeable THUMP that the 2017 had when shifting from park into drive. I’m going to think this one over and might do this one.

Do yourself a favor and educate yourself on buyback vehicles and understand the risks of buying one. Here are a few things to keep in mind...

If you're willing to take some risks, you can get a really good deal. Buy backs can sell for 10 to 40% under current market value.

When you decide to sell, keep in mind that some dealerships will not buy your vehicle from you.

The specific vehicle you're looking at came from California and their lemon laws are crazy. Don't quote me on this, but I think a dealership has two attempts to fix an issue before the lemon law kicks in, but maybe someone from CA can chime in.

You may already know this, but the Raptor was reacquired due to "check engine light". That's pretty darn generic.

Lastly, this truck has some "Minor" frontal damage reported, so you may want to give the front area good look over.

I checked the front out really well and I didn’t see any damage or signs of damage on the front part of the frame or behind the front bumper. I had the dealer give me a copy of the car fax due to it being a Buyback truck. This is not the first one I have ran across here in Illinois. The Ford dealers that had these trucks were upfront about them being buy backs and even told me what it was for. I will ask this dealer to see if they know what this one was bought back for and then make a decision. Thanks for the information.

The dealer got back to me on the 2018 I looked at on Saturday. They checked the service records and the truck was bought back by Ford for the Cam Phaser issue. I have seen that on a few trucks I have ran across over the last year while searching. and I also ran across a few that was transmission related as well. I think this is ok. I also asked about an extended warranty for the truck if I was to purchase this one and they do offer extended warranty's.

The prices of almost everything is not going to be coming down anytime soon. In fact there are rumors of shortages of other goods on the horizon. Looks like last year was the time to get a good deal on a Raptor, and getting a good deal on one might not return for quite some time.

With that said I think I could live with this one. My wife just has to approve. I hope she does....
