I saw this post by amphibian, and it got me to thinking...

You can get an ELM-327 off amazon for $10-20 (get wifi for ios, bluetooth for android) Then pair it with a mobile App (I use Dash Command but there are many out there) for all the info that is available on the ODBII bus.

Here's some screenshots of Dash Command with the ford ecoboost skin (not sure why it's called that, I think just because it uses the same colors as the oem ecoboost dash)

I really like the idea of being able to use my phone as a monitor / code reader. The DashCommand that he references looks pretty cool, but to get the full version for each vehicle is $10 per - for me that would be $30.

Anyone else have a version they like? I am also looking for recommendations for the port dongle.

I will second the desire for experienced opinions on this one, would be a neat tool.

I also have a OBD scanner and it works but you can't leave it plugged in.
It throws a wrench if you start the truck with it plugged in, other then that it works good.
Sorry can't remember the brand off the top of my head.

I have been using the OBDLink MX dongle.
Amazon.com: ScanTool 426101 OBDLink MX Bluetooth: OBD Adapter/Diagnostic Scanner for Android & Windows: Automotive

I have three apps that I have been using:
DashCommaned
Torque Pro
OBDLink (from the makers of the dongle).

I like the Torque and OBDLink apps the best. The each have strong points. I prefer Torque for the gauges and the real time monitoring of readiness checks, but prefer the OBD for code reading.

As several have alluded to, getting a cheap dongle is only going to give you issues (setting off the CEL, battery drain, etc.). The MX is probably the bet, but it is quite a bit more than the cheap units. I have used it on Fords, GMs, my Miata and a Porsche and have been pleased with the results. One note: this unit (Bluetooth) will NOT work with Apple products. They say you need to use the WiFi version.

They were just running a huge sale two weeks ago, $69 with free shipping.
For both the BT and the WiFi each.

I'm subscribe with them so it may only be through email.
