The weight of the truck needs to be taken off of the jack and put on the jackstands, then the jack becomes the backup. For the job being done you want the differential to drop so the proper placement of the jackstand needs to be changed to the frame. I would also throw a spare tire under there where the jackstands are now. Lost a coworker to this type of accident years ago so think it through and be safe.

If you are referring to @Gumby photos above, the jack is on a metal hitch step turned sideways in the hitch receiver and the jackstands are just under the axle as a safety precaution, not actually touching the axle. The angle of the photo makes it look like it was jacked on the diff, but it was not.

Steering rack & sector shafts are off. The rack gets rebuilt locally (because I do NOT want to spend a hundy on shipping or gas), and the new shafts are ordered. I weighed the difference between spending another $400 and a couple of easy hours right now, or roll the dice on the lifespan left after 148xxx miles by 3 previous owners, (and whatever idiots they let drive it). It was all oil- and rust-free, and tight when removed.
There's a steering rebuilder shop down the hill that has been used for years by fab shops and quoted me $225 for a walk-in rebuild, complete in 2-3days, but it's almost 300mi and maybe 6hrs driving (for both trips). Compare that to dealing with 2-way shipping a 40lb package ($60 each way), and waiting on your core deposit return after confirmation they send you the correct replacement? The local Napa Auto quoted over $1K to walk in and exchange it. RockAuto wanted almost $900 all in, yet neglected to mention that return shipping the core wasn't included. So they would be ~$960 total and eventually the $250 core fee return. What would you guys do?

Installed Built Right bed panels yesterday, then went and took a long cold shower.

It was hot as

Not to mention................these were a PITA to install! No instructions. WTF?!?!

Now that I've done it, would probably go a lot faster if I had to do it again.

Not to mention that I spent the first hour looking for my Torx-30 socket :mad:

Now that they are in, I like the looks and functionality. The 3-Gal spare fuel container takes up almost the entire rear panel :oops:

But much less than the 8 jerry cans I had in there before.

Id make the trip. Never liked dealing with customer service on the phone. In person if possible.

Plan a mini vacation around this maintenance. If you don't, you're passing up a really cool opportunity.
