Dust alone will do it, seen it many times.
Partially why I switched back to stock filter box. Carry a few extra filters and swap them out,

If your not careful it will tear the rubber boots like the afe has. Then instant limp mode

I wish I could put the factory box on but I have the Roush setup. Is there anything preventive I can do to avoid this besides constantly checking it when off-roading? I was thinking about buying one of those dust socks that go over it but I'm not sure how well they work. I know what you mean about the boots. Mine didn't tear but the filter fell off on me before but luckily I caught it pretty quick because I pulled over to see what the hell was rattling around under the hood.

Buy a pre filter sock it will definately keep your filter clean longer. I got bad pollen this year and when your opened the hood of the truck the prefilter sock was basically yellow from pollen. If i hadnt had the cover it would have been on my filter. So i just clean the pre filter sock

Before and after.

Man that's a good before and after shot looks nice and pretty. It's funny I wash my truck at least once a week but I've never cleaned under the hood. Think I may have to do that this weekend. What did you just spray it down with a powerwasher?

Ya I think I'll order one tonight. I could just go buy a K&N one from the store but OCD won't allow me to put it on a Roush filter. Lol.

Just did mine at the car wash yesterday. Grabbed some Gunk Foam cleaner sprayed it down and let it sit 10-15 minutes then rinsed it in the bay. Clean as new now just don't spray the alternator or ecu too much. Gunk makes a non silicon protector too to help prevent dust next time.
