Okay have the svc loaded, moved from stock and the from 5 star 93 perf for about a year. My thoughts are these:

You really can't compare them. The svc tune is like raptor version 1.5. It still shifts to fifth at 30 mph, but now it anticipates the throttle and drops to third right when you need it. Throttle response is better than stock but not twitchy. Overall it is a good mild refinement of the stock mapping.

The 5 star tune is a beast, best unleashed when facing a lot of off high speed off roading.

I do not think its a which is better, honestly I would get both, which I now have. I will run svc on the three hour trip to Gause, then load the 93 5 star tune and let her rip on the track.

My thoughts exactly. I just loaded the 5 star performance tune and it is serious fun, not for DD though

Very good explanations by you guys, thanks. This may be a stupid question, but since you guys say the SVC tune is somewhat subtle and kinda like a version 1.5 of the stock tune...do you feel like it's still definitely worth doing over stock?

I'm only 3-4 months in to having my raptor, but I'm impressed with the stock power and liking the balance of the tune. That's what interest me in the SVC tune, it being similar to stock but better. What's the main improvements of the SVC vs stock? Anything that's drastically better?

Absolutely! Even if it didn't make any more power it would worth it for driveability alone (throttle response and shift strategy.). But it does make more power.

Maybe its just me but a 3rd gear pull on the SVC (AFE version) feels a good bit stronger than on the 5star 93 performance. It feels better all around with the AFE no doubt because they flow benched it. The 5star feels like something is off.

Throttle response and shifting at WOT are, to me, the best parts of the SVC tune over stock.

If you are ok with stock, I think you'll love the SVC. Is it worth $250 plus the cost of the tuner? Well, worth is a relative thing. I think it is. But you may not. Depends how big a hole $500 will leave in your pocket.

I wouldn't use the word "drastically" better. I've found a lot of hyperbole when reading tune reviews. "It wakes the truck up" is my favorite. Really? I didn't know my truck was sleepy to begin with.

It's an improvement for sure. And it's noticeable. You'd have to be nerve damaged not to notice it.

Thanks @Stang and @ZBoater for the responses. Sounds very tempting!

A few other questions...

I like to run 87 octane, just the built in cheap ass in me (even though I bought a Raptor...go figure), does the tune still make a substantial/noticeable improvement running 87?

Also, talked to a very well respected member on here who said he fried his ECU on his truck with a tune. Not trying to cause panic, just curious if anyone else has had any trouble with stuff like that?

Thanks everyone for the feedback

Edit: just read the SVC post on the other thread about 87 octane. That helps but still kinda curious if you guys have had real world experience in the difference the octane makes? Especially the difference from stock 87 to SVC tuned 87 octane?

93 > 87. You will make more power with 93. But you will still notice a difference wit 87.

Never heard about any of these tunes "frying" an ECU. Gotta be something else, like disconnecting the cable in the middle of a tune.

Thanks ZBoater!

Luckily for me, I am close to SVC, so I'm thinking when I pull the trigger on the tune, I may just head down there and see if they'll install it for me. I'm not very tech savy and have had a tendency to mess things up in the past, so I'd prefer it to be done by someone smarter than me. I know it's a simple thing, but I get intimidated that I'll do something wrong and I don't see wanting to tweak with too much since it seems to be along the lines of stock. Everyone seems pretty happy, gets very tempting...

I have a 5-Star tuner that I've had installed for 80K of the 90,000 miles I currently have on my SCREW. I've had many dually 1-ton trucks prior to this Raptor for the past 25 years (mostly Ford-350) and it seems that a tranny re-build usually happens between 80--120,000 miles. Same story with my friends and their trucks, SUVs, etc.

If you work a truck, it will happen a bit sooner. If I'm hauling horses with my F-350 more than usual, I expect it to happen sooner and I'm guessing that if we're installing tuners, CAI's, exhausts and other performance upgrades to our Raptors, we are probably "working" the truck.

I have found that preventative maintenance and updates certainly extend the life of the transmission, although it's a bit tough to calculate the additional mileage with any exactness.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that I expect the tranny to go-out in the coming miles and it will be hard to blame it on any particular tuner. The truck was modified to run hard and I definitely run it that way. It's been a lot of fun.
