I would like to give the SVC tune a try but I just can't justify $250 for the same canned tune they sell to everybody.

If it weren't for the fact that I've already got $ tied up in the 5 Star tunes, I wouldn't have a problem with it. However, the additional $250 is making it very difficult to justify.

so anyone figured out the magic formula yet? 5star with unit and 5 custom tunes is $400 and SVC is $550. seems like people like something from A and then something from B, can you spec out on the custom tunes "hey i like to use 87 pump gas around town, but when i hit the dirt ill up to 93?" if they are saved and loadable can you run 1 tune out to the site and then load the next one and then reverse for the drive home?

For the svc you can reduce global spark to match the octane of your fuel. Jeff can give a much better explanation than I can. I'm 100% pleased with my svc tune and the support I've gotten from Jeff and svc. It's a no brainer to me.

Having tried both, it seems to me 5* has a broader range of options on their shift strategies, not sure if other parameters are also different. The SVC tune seems to behave more like the stock tune and adjust based on the pressure you put on the gas pedal.

I can't speak authoritatively on the merits of one approach vs another as I am not a mechanic or an engineer, and I don't exactly understand what is going on behind the scenes. To me, it boils down to what I was looking for.

So you either look for an improvement across the board or you want to push the envelope a little harder. The 5* 93 performance tune was awesome. It turned my Raptor into a beast. But I didn't want a beast. Not as a daily driver. I wanted better throttle response. I wasn't unhappy with the stock power. But the shifting and lag could use improvement. SVC improved it.

I'm not wanting to be changing tunes every time I change my activity. I don't want to be changing tunes and change gas flavors every week. I want to pick one and drive. So the SVC tune suited ME better.

Behind the scenes there could be other things happening that I don't know about. But with 5* I felt my Raptor was "overclocked". And some may be looking for exactly that. I wasn't.

I bought 5* and I loved it. Now I also have SVC and love it more. I don't intend to switch back and forth. I picked one and am satisfied. Pick your poison and enjoy!

Sorry if you've addressed either of the following questions in this thread or the other one, but I don't recall having seen them. Anyway, do you have any thoughts on which tune is "more appropriate," for lack of a better description, for someone who does 90% of their driving in town? Any noticeable difference in gas mileage between the two for in town driving?

Appropriate is a relative term. I found the 93 perf 5* tune "twitchy", meaning my truck felt very aggressive, like a caged beast wanting to be let out. It was fun for about 10 minutes. Me, personally, would not like that to be my daily driver. But that's me. I loaded a high octane performance tune and am complaining about my truck being too aggressive. Duh.

Stock tune is ok, but I don't like the lag between me pressing the gas and the truck responding. The shifting I found smooth. The SVC tune preserves some of that "civility" at slow speeds, the typical speeds you'd drive in heavy traffic or urban areas. But you step on the gas and the truck jumps.

So for me, the SVC tune seems more "appropriate" for city daily driving, but YMMV.
