Rough shift 3-4

51k on my 2020 802A. Out of the blue (and intermittently) , shifts are sometimes rough from 3-4

Any TSBs to address ? It's been ok this week actually @FordTechOne

If its when the transmission is “cold” that’s entirely normal. The F-clutch applies for the first time on the 3-4 or 3-5 shift, so it takes a second to refill the cylinder.

Mines always been harder going in and out of 3 whether it’s up or down. I use sport mode more now to avoid the 3-1 downshift when pulling into a parking space. That is jarring. Definitely worse when cold.

If its when the transmission is “cold” that’s entirely normal. The F-clutch applies for the first time on the 3-4 or 3-5 shift, so it takes a second to refill the cylinder.
Will that cause some hesitation going into the next gear as well when it's cold? I have noticed that and also felt like I have not had full power for the first 20 seconds or so and then the boost kicks in a bit more but not so much turbo but the transmission giving me full access kind of feeling. Very hard to explain.

Yes, that’s normal. The transmission needs to warm up to temperature in order to operate smoothly and properly.

Same, except it now slips going into second (revs, but no forward motion), and then when it goes into third it feels like I’ve been rear-ended by another car. Somewhat better when warm, but still pretty friggin’ bad.

I’m pretty much screwed though since at 112K miles, my truck’s 12K miles out of the extended warranty, but they did do a filter and fluid change, along with a new transmission valve body at 98K miles for the same problem…only not nearly as bad.

Trying to get through to the correct Ford Customer Service rep to see if there’s anything they’ll do since this was clearly a problem before it went out of warranty. Like pissing up a rope so far though.

Anyone here have any ideas on how I should proceed?

P.S. Oh, and btw, cam phasers just shit the bed again a week ago…this will be set #4 for my truck. :confused:

Depends how bad it is. Mine had a real long hesitation and would slam into 4th. Playing with clutch boost pressure and timing helped, but totally fixing it resulted in harsh shifts during normal ops. Took the truck in and got the valvebody and CDF drum done, and it was fixed. They also put the upgrades raybestos GPZ clutches in for me. Trans is buttery smooth now with some tuning tweaks.

Where’d you have the work done? Ford dealer or independent shop?

After spending almost an hour talking to the dealership, and Ford CS, I think I’m ****** for my repairs; I was very politely, and with what I felt was sincere regret on the part of the CS folks I talked to today and last week, basically told to go pound sand.

Disappointing…especially since this issue is widely known, and my trans was slowly ******** the bed long before the warranty expired…very well documented service visits for the trans and cam phasers in my truck for the past 75K+ miles.

Guess the current corporate play is “get ‘em out the door with bandaid fixes until the vehicle’s out of warranty.” If I didn’t love this truck so much, I’d sell it or trade it in…but gonna fix it right on my own dime.

But **** them…I’ll never buy another new vehicle from them.

My truck got fixed under warranty at the dealer. I have CPO to 100k miles, almost out. Then I have the carmax warranty to 150 lol

It also helps I'm good friends with the advisor..
