GEN 2 Question for the mall crawlers out there....

You’ll never get an exact match with plastic (flares) to metal (fenders, quarters, bumpers) no matter how hard you try. We do our best to mitigate this by blending color when we paint vehicles. Adding to the issue of different substrates, each color code has a different set of variants. Your code for Leadfoot (JX) could have 3 or 4, or 15 different variants. When we do a job we get out our paint chips to match the closest variant we can then spray out a test panel to ensure we are as close as possible before we spray.

I think your truck looks great for what it is bud! Not many people besides yourself will see the color difference, and if they do, tell them you had the flares painted recently and your truck is 3 years old to explain the discrepancy.

Too many times the shops, to their own detriment, don’t explain the process and leave people with unrealistic expectations. In this case, I’m sure the dealer told you everything would be perfect without ever consulting the body shop themselves. I can see the difference you’re talking about but wouldn’t notice it in passing, I think your truck looks killer!

Wraps are great for their purpose. Wouldn’t want to be the ******* cleaning all that adhesive off when you want to go back to OE though!!

Too many times the shops, to their own detriment, don’t explain the process and leave people with unrealistic expectations. In this case, I’m sure the dealer told you everything would be perfect without ever consulting the body shop themselves. I can see the difference you’re talking about but wouldn’t notice it in passing, I think your truck looks killer!

Weirdly enough, just got an email from the GM of the dealership and THEY arent happy with it so they are taking it back to paint for me today to attempt for a closer match. Wasnt expecting that but im really happy they are willing to try.

That is great news! The lighter color on the flares would have bothered me every time I looked at it.

I had the fender flares, door handles, mirror caps and bumpers painted on my Tuxedo Black Metallic Gen 1 and they matched perfectly. I do not agree with the others who said it cannot be done do to different surfaces, blah blah blah. A good paint shop can make them match...

Agreed. Luckily mine a pretty dead nuts matched. The metallics and tri coats can be tricky in how they are sprayed, but certainly can be done right.
They have multiple colors for the same paint code, variations. example, RR code for mine has 3 variations. If you just grab one you would be surprised how different they are

A good paint shop will blend adjacent panels to ensure color match. To just make a blanket statement like “a good shop....” won’t change the fact that material acts differently according to the surface that was painted.

Plus, “a good shop” can match black with black pretty easy, Leadfoot is a little tougher.

I am glad we violently agree with each other! The quotes helps me see that...

It honestly would have bothered me too but i think i could have pushed that to the side if absolutley had to and there was no other choice.

I also had my 2011 FX4 paint matched in tuxedo black mettalic by a random shop close to home and they were spot on matching a brand new plastic grille with an 8 year old paint job on the metal body. I dont claim to be an expert on anything, but i was shocked to hear how difficult it can be. Im just glad the dealership is going out of there way to attempt to make it better.

Ill be posting pictures when it comes back out of paint to showcase how "round 2" went.
