Maybe...but bought probably my last 15+ vehicles via email or quick call. Dealers today don't expect people to drive around and especially for a Raptor that most don't even have. Have to go to where inventory is -- have started many a good relationships with GM of dealers by calling. Don't deal with floor people.
Mileage may vary. It really depends on the dealer, region, and the vehicle. All I'm saying is if you don't find a deal by exhausting arms length methods, it doesn't hurt to go in person. Body language can say things words never could.

You may have better luck making a deal by showing up in person when able. Salespeople are less inclined to haggle over long distance (no skin in the game; way more window shopping) or if you won’t make the effort to show up.
I've run into the opposite when shopping for a more run-of-the-mill vehicle. The local dealers figure that they have you by the balls because you've invested the time and energy to go there. The sales manager that you get on the phone knows that you have almost nothing invested and that they have one shot to make a sale. Find the right one at the right time and you can get a great deal.

There's a theory in certain sales situations where they KNOW a live customer is there to buy. If you were at the local Sears store, looking at refrigerators, with your kids in tow, (for example), the sales people knew you NEEDED it right then and there. If you were a dad looking at a crazy-big tool cart while the wife is nagging, you ain't buying anything.

I am opposite of that, if my wife is nagging, see is saying just buy the damm thing so we can get out of here. Or, I’ll give you a few hundred for your b-day early.

Which is true 99% of the time a customer bothers to go in and starts talking price. Are they wrong occasionally? Sure. But the way to make the most money is to play the odds. And 99% are there to buy and 95% of those are financially ignorant. So they píss off the 6% of buyers who don't fit the profile? So what?

^^^^ this was my dating philosophy back in the '80's. I closed many a deal just by being there. Dayum, I miss those years

I'm priority 10 finally on my 10k ADM R order that I placed in July, hopefully it hits this year. It looks like I may have an MSRP R lined up in the next month or so - between these two Ive hopefully avoided the crazy markups, but it took a lot of time and patience.

I acquired my wife's vehicle as the result of this exact scenario. I won't detail the winding road that I took to get to this point. All I'll say is that I woke up in the middle of one night last August - and for some reason started to browse a nearby Mercedes Benz inventory on my iPad. They had a brand new, 2022 AMG GLE63S SUV in the colors I'd ordered a year prior, but could not get (MB stopped production of this engine for a period; I won't go into why). For those who don't know, this vehicle is just about as hard to get as a Raptor R. Anyway, I called the next morning. Yes, they had it. (It arrived at the dealership two days prior). I made an appointment, bought this vehicle with 7 miles on it - and drove away within an hour and a half. (The person who'd ordered it had financing fall through). I found out that two others had appointments that morning to look at this vehicle, but arrived a bit late; they were pissed that someone had beat them to it. Crazy luck. BTW, don't try beating my 5'2" wife from 0-60 in your Raptor R. Her AWD 63S runs a 3.6 0-60 as well...
