Can't speak to what's legal in Commiefornia. Where I live I have my pistol on me for problems and my AR-15 pistol under the back seat for big problems.

Ronin makes a cool magnetic gun mount, possibly for inside the center console. However, unless you have a CCW in CA, it's illegal to have anything in your truck (even if it's locked) unless you're transporting to or from the range at the time

Been carrying a 12 gauge shotgun in my vehicle since Reagan was Prez. Most all LEOs in my hometown as well. You can carry them across nearly every state line and I've taken one thru Mexican and Canadian customs.
My reasons...
Learned more about weapons serving my Uncle and got to shoot pretty much every caliber out there and carry them(the smaller ones) in vehicles.
Never got tapped while driving in bad guy land but several friends did and dismounting and shooting takes some thought and coordination for future thought.
Shotguns are crowd pleasers, not to take anything away from handguns and ARs.
However...
Lead dog in the stack in house takedowns in Iraq nearly always had a Moss burg 500 handy. Having been issued a CAR15, M9 and 1911 in my past I see all your points with good reason and measure.

For me: give me 00 Buckshot inside 20ft any day...

A police style shotgun mount for my Raptor is in my future...

Well bro...... Do some serious research... We moved out of that state about 3 years ago... Sounds like some of the guns mentioned here would not even be legal in that state to begin with. Think about folding stocks... Have to put blocks in to defeat the folding mechanism. There are soooooo many painful points. Also, without the CCW, the only "legal" way to transport a weapon is to have the weapon and ammunition separated in two separate containers. If I remember correctly, the ammo does not need to be locked, but the weapon does...... So many laws and such a shocking difference from what you are used to.... Sorry bro..... Might want to stick with the nerf gun. haha

One last point... If you are an illegal alien or criminal, you may get away with it....

Get a CCW permit... depending on the county, they aren't that hard to get- unless its LA or San Francisco area...

I also have a vault in the center console.

I am curious as to what circumstance you would expect to encounter where you would need a shotgun in your truck, especially under the rear seat and locked. Your access time would be so great you would already be compromised by the tone you got to it. If you feel the need for personal protection you would be far better off with a concealed carry pistol permit with the gun at ready access and the knowledge and training on how and when best to use it
