Someone school me why people in Cali don't buy out of state in order to get a reasonable deal and pay small shipping fee to get truck to them vs paying over sticker in state?

People do it all the time. The only reasons not to are ignorance and laziness. And I want to point out that those are perfectly valid reasons. :) I try not to be ignorant, but I do try to be lazy.

Msrp + 3500 mark up or
5-8k under sticker + 500-1000 shipping.... seems like a no brainer.

I see this all the time on here with Cali people and don't understand. Is there additional state tax, fees, etc for buying out of state when you live in Cali that discourage purchasing out of state?

When you purchase a new vehicle from out of state, there are more hoops to jump through in order to register the vehicle. In the case of the Raptor, you have to take it to a certified weigh station and then have an independent third party confirm that the vehicle meets CA emission standards (usually by looking at the placard in the engine bay). Additional complications include the following:
  • Attempting to purchase a vehicle long distance when demand is high. The dealership won't want to hold the vehicle until you can fly out there and inspect the truck. I missed on a half a dozen out of state vehicles that were "just sold to someone who signed the paperwork". Of course, these were for trucks that had been advertised at sub-MSRP. So the desirability and timing are critical to this option.
  • Once again, with in demand or short supply vehicles (or worse when both conditions exist), dropping everything to book a flight and taking enough time away from work for the return drive.
  • When I requested a shipping quote from a shipper active on 6speedonline shipping from TX to CA, they quoted $3745 as the Raptor would require two spaces in the transporter. Plus, they wanted flexibility on the pickup timing - which can be an issue for the selling dealership.

An MSRP deal in CA was possible up through late 2020 but it took a lot of negotiating with the online sales team. The dealership where I purchased my truck sold three Raptors that weekend and I would have lost out on mine had I not driven down and signed paperwork the day after we agreed on the price.

I had to laugh, there is a post running right now where a guy is asking $57K for a 7 years old 2014 Raptor. It's a beautiful truck, but you would be crazy to pay that much money for an old older one......it's not a classic.
That’s what I found in 2019 when I was looking. I was deciding between a low mileage 14 and a low mileage 17. Had to be a Scab for me. The 14’s were 45-50 with 40k miles or less. The 17’s were 48-52 with 25k miles or less. No brainer to get the 17.

Ok, so this does sound like Cali makes it a bit of a pain!

But I wasn't really directing it at OP or right now. I've been seeing these ADMs and crazy mark up in Cali market on this forum and mustang forums for a few years. GT350's, Raptors, and new GT500's. Just really sucks for Cali customers. Seems they have to put in the work or bite the bullet!

Is it primarily a Ford thing or is it a Cali thing in general for any high performance vehicle?

Galpin Ford (Los Angeles, California) one of the largest dealers in the United States, has a Shelby Raptor in stock. $110K plus tax and license ($121K).

The market in California has always been different than the rest of the country. Ford has several of the largest volume dealers in the US located in Southern California. Galpin, Sunrise, Ken Grody, South Bay all sell more units than most states dealers combined. When I was looking for a Raptor early in 2020 Sunrise Ford didn't just have a few Raptors on the lot like most dealers, they had over 50. The huge volume dealers grab every Raptor that comes off the line that they can. Ford Performance vehicles sell like hot cakes in California and the vast majority of buys don't wish to invest the time, money or energy in tracking down a vehicle out of state when they are staring at the one they want on the dealers lot. Last March/April most dealer in SoCal were somewhere in between MSRP and 5K over. Ford's not going to step on its most lucrative market.

the cali market is so different because anything that's normal in another state causes cancer in cali.

It's the nuttiest state I've ever seen. No water. Earthquakes up the *****. Forest first that will scorch your little ******* off. Gangs. Riots. Holy shit, what a shit hole state. ;)

Hey @MDJAK...tell us how you really feel about Cali

Seeing as you are a fellow Packer fan, I will pour my heart out to you about exactly how I feel about Cali.

I actually was joking, obviously, as I think you are. I see all the areas people have to go off roading there and my drool goes right down my chin. The amazing Pacific. The sequoias.

I'm not much of a traveler but have been to Cali perhaps 3 times. Once in Monterey Bay, absolutely beautiful place. Another time in and around San Fran, up to Nappa, Mendocino, etc.

Yeah, it's a wacky state. And here in NY we got an old governor who thinks he's the King and that it's ok to ask girls half his age if they want to have sex with him. Well, on second though, ain't really nothing wrong with that.
