When you purchase a new vehicle from out of state, there are more hoops to jump through in order to register the vehicle. In the case of the Raptor, you have to take it to a certified weigh station and then have an independent third party confirm that the vehicle meets CA emission standards (usually by looking at the placard in the engine bay). Additional complications include the following:
- Attempting to purchase a vehicle long distance when demand is high. The dealership won't want to hold the vehicle until you can fly out there and inspect the truck. I missed on a half a dozen out of state vehicles that were "just sold to someone who signed the paperwork". Of course, these were for trucks that had been advertised at sub-MSRP. So the desirability and timing are critical to this option.
- Once again, with in demand or short supply vehicles (or worse when both conditions exist), dropping everything to book a flight and taking enough time away from work for the return drive.
- When I requested a shipping quote from a shipper active on 6speedonline shipping from TX to CA, they quoted $3745 as the Raptor would require two spaces in the transporter. Plus, they wanted flexibility on the pickup timing - which can be an issue for the selling dealership.
An MSRP deal in CA was possible up through late 2020 but it took a lot of negotiating with the online sales team. The dealership where I purchased my truck sold three Raptors that weekend and I would have lost out on mine had I not driven down and signed paperwork the day after we agreed on the price.
