The sound is set by the size of the cylinders and RPM. It's just explosions and frequency. A V6 with the same cylinder size, compression, valving, etc., running at 75% RPM of a V8 would sound indistinguishable from the V8. It's physics, and no amount of V8 chest beating can change that.

Most V6's do sound different, because the same reasons that dictated going to a V6 also govern all sorts of other things, like said cylinder size, compression, number of valves, exhaust, etc. All those things impart a unique timbre to each engine. Plus the RPMs are usually higher on a V6, so the pitch is correspondingly higher.

The main thing that will prevent the R2 from sounding like the R1 is the turbo. Placing a spinning fan between the cylinders and the tailpipe muffles and muddies the sound tremendously. So no, this particular V6 will never sound like the old V8.

But, V8 luvies, that means that mythical V8 ecoboost that so many of you dream about would sound like a muddy mess also. However, my understanding is that Ford has been going a different direction and is talking with Elon Musk about doing a higher performance upgrade for next year - https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/780275236922994688

I believe I've posted this before...

Firing order and exhaust configuration also play a role in the final sound. X-pipe, H-pipe, resonator, etc.

The 3.5 Ecoboost has the same cylinder displacement as the 4.6L V8. They sound nothing alike.

I mentioned all of that.

I don't believe this is true. First of all, I think you have your math backwards? Second, V8s (non flat plane) don't always alternate cylinders from one bank to the other the way V6s do. This is one of the main reasons they don't sound the same at any RPM or variance thereof.

For all of you wanting to see more Raptor engine pics, here you go - fresh from the Cleveland plant. Enjoy! That's a lot of power in one room! :)

Man that is a lot of engines built to not know what the hp and tq is. ; )

Thanks for the pictures!!

I'm assuming these are just production line builds and not two man teams doing the assembly as some of the SVT stuff has I the past?

Yes, they are normal production line builds.
