Having run in all sorts of conditions from snow, rock and sand, mostly sand, you just have to make sure the system engages, and seem to be fine. I like 2 wheeling a lot. I can 2 wheel the dunes, it is smoother and easier to drive. For Havoc, ran smoothest with 2 wheel drive, posi unlocked, traction control on and off road mode off. Just letting the computer run slippage on first day and did not hurt tires, and handled very well. Second day played with posi, off road mode, traction partly off, and tore up rear tires. Did run 4 wheel on a couple of the hills, and also did it at the night run, to pull out of the corners. Does not steer so well in 2 wheel drive when you are on the brakes.

I ran day one mostly in 2WD without the rear locked. I did switch it between 2WD and 4H quite a few times when I caught up with someone on a hill and was slowed to a crawl in the middle of the hill. The second day I mainly ran 2WD with the rear locked except for the night run. I switched to 4H during that run due to the hill climb ,that I at first thought I had gotten off course for. Turns out it was not off course :) I can concur with Joe's statement about the tires. My tires took a beating and are chunked pretty bad.

I agree with Huck, don't shift while your spinning, or try not to be turning when you shift it into 4wd. I normally always run in 4wd when I'm offroad, on the sandy trails in MI, I want to be able to steer away from the tree not drift into it. The 4wd lets me full the front thru a turn on a narrow trail.

so if you follow this routine you can run under load in 4w drive without issue?

Funny you said that about the front pulling through turns up there Keith. When we were there last trip with you guys Lea Ann asked why I liked to use 4wd on the trails. Gave her that same explanation as to why I use it. There are times I want the front to pull and not just act like rudders in the soft stuff with limited room to turn. When there is room sliding around is fun. She is asking more questions lately. She is about ready to switch seats once in a while and drive off road.

i was in 2wd with the locker locked, until i hit up hill stuff. first day i was in 2 for most of it, till i ran into slower drivers, and then i had to go slower uphill, got stuck once, put it in 4 and was fine.

2nd day i knew how 2wd and running hard uphill would chew up tires, so i switched to 4wd kinda early. then i forgot about it, wish i woulda turned it off for the high speed areas.

cornering was definatly easier in 2wd with it locked....

Best post in this thread so far.

2WD is great fun in the right conditions. Locker engaged really can make a difference (if you remember to engage it HA HA).

4H is great too especially when you're in tight areas (narrower trails) with brush on the sides and the ground is soft (as it often is here in the Cali desert). Keeping up speed on these types of trails is a good reason to run in 4H so you get some front wheel drive pull as you turn more sharply in between rocks and/or trees and brush.

Once you get used to 2 w/ locked rear and 4H you'll know when YOU LIKE to use each of them.

Don't be afraid to try them just don't over-drive your truck and you'll be fine. And there's no mystery to shifting into 4H just let the truck make the transition before you hammer the go pedal. And 4L is a different story completely.
