Great response and fast...!
But guys - I have a question here: if this GF chip is only a resistor fooling the ECM that the air intake is much colder than it is - why as soon as the cold season started I noticed a drop in mileage of about 3MPG, same driving style and conditions. I am at 13 now and before was hovering above 16. If cold air always drops the mileage then what is this resistor doing really? In an E-mail response they quarantee 30 extra ponies and extra 3-4 MPG - and this is specifically for a Raptor.

I'd get rid of it and stick with something that's been working for guys for years with proven results.

In a Raptor the main computer is not called a ECU or ECM, it's called a PCM ( Program Control Modular ) it does way more than changing timing and air/fuel ratio.

5 Star!

Long answer:
I'm gonna take a swing at this in simple terms. Don't hold my feet to the flames, I'm over simplifying it on purpose.

Cold air does improve performance. How? Colder air is more dense - more oxygen by volume than hot(ter) air. To maintain a proper air(oxygen) to fuel ratio, your ECU responds by adding more fuel or else the mixture would run lean. More oxygen and more fuel = bigger boom = more power. However, it typically means less fuel economy.

What this chip is doing, is telling the ECU the air coming in is colder than it really is (more oxygen), so it adjusts the mixture by adding fuel. Problem is, there isn't more oxygen, the air isn't colder, and the adjustment causes your engine to run rich. Running rich means there's more fuel than there should be and not all of it will burn. It just gets injected into the cylinder and spit right out the exhaust. It smells, runs like dog poo, and ruins emissions systems on the way out. Gasoline is very corrosive, remember.

Sure, more power can equate to better fuel efficiency, but that's only under certain circumstances. For example, using the additional HP/TQ to achieve and maintain your desired speed in the highest gear/lowest RPMs possible. Conversely, with less power the same speed may only be achieved at higher RPMs in a lower gear. The chip won't do any of the above. These are the principals applied to custom tuning. Most of the fuel savings go out the window when one wishes to utilize the extra power available from the tune. It kind of averages out.

Why does fuel economy go down so much in the winter, especially in V8 trucks?

- Winter blend gas is proven to reduce gas mileage by 10% or more.
- Like we said above, colder, oxygen rich air will demand more fuel to stay within proper AFR.
- Many people allow their vehicles to "warm up" and idle for a lot longer in the colder months
- The defroster engages the AC compressor in most vehicles which has also been proven to decrease fuel economy.
- Most people don't properly inflate their tires in accordance with colder temperatures which will lower tire PSI significantly between summer and winter months.
- Use of 4WD in the snow drastically decreases MPG.

Short answer:

They are lying.

@NickPic83, I don’t find myself agreeing with the statement that it’s just an overpriced resistor. However, I can’t really say anything in its favour although I liked it a lot. My IAT sensor recently went bonkers and I had no idea what to do. The replacement is too damn expensive so I though why not use my own electronics skills, had to place a new IAT sensor and replace some diodes but it worked and it’s been working great for the last 3weeks.

Not sure I follow what exactly u did...TLR u saying u had one of these installed?

If u disagree what details can u give us that says it worked? What is it that u liked? What caused your IAT to go bonkers? I have never heard of one go bad on a newer vehicle out of the blue.

If u search these u will see many comments that match what the other members and I have stated. The are an over priced resistor. Honestly this can be made from parts at your local radio shack...the computer is looking for certain values in a parameter. This "chip" is keeping "x" value to make the computer think its colder than what it is. Thats it really...

Up 10% on mpg and 30 more horses? Of course they're lying.

But the guys who market male enhancement products are all telling the truth.
(Size matters. That's why I own a Raptor.)
