I myself won't buy a Gen 2 anyways, or a Gen 3 unless it's got a V8 or the full electric with long range capabilities. I absolutely love my Gen 1 and will continue to upgrade it. There's not much the Gen 2 has that I specifically want for my uses. Things like lane change assist, adaptive cruise, lane departure, etc. aren't a deal breaker for what I use the truck for. They're great features for those people who regularly travel long highway distances, but I don't. I use my Flex for that.

I would have someone look at it or crack her open and take a look. Hard to say what someone else has put it through. Some cases at that mileage could be fine with maintenance upkeep and some could be shot by 80k. I do believe Ford recommends a service at 150k though.
The 150k maintenance for the TOD is just a fluid change, per Ford manual. The big thing to note is that there is a specific mention to use Mercon LV fluid. There’s even a big sticker right on the case that says to use only that fluid.

One item of note from the linked article is that the Gen 2 TODs seem to have a locking ring for the 4H, whereas the “Gen 1” TODs simply offer “full engagement” of the clutch packs. There could be conflicting info here though because early versions (pre 2012) did not even offer 4Lo. Since the 2012+ offers 4Lo, I would guess the locking mechanism would necessarily HAVE to be included in the later versions. I would think that the fully engaged clutch packs alone could not handle the 4Lo torque without the locking in place.

Being able to mat the gas pedal in the rain from a dead stop isn't for everyone. Or even just getting on a wet on-ramp without having the rear step out. Using 4a, driving in the rain, I see colors I've never seen before.

Totally different driving experience.

OP, what are the odds of this working on a 2010? I would be interested in buying whatever case you don't end up using, if it should work.

I'm trying to read your post and decide if you got lost on your way to the Gen 2 forums or if you're trying to convince me that I don't know how automotive drivetrains work. Buddy, I run an automotive shop.

Nice. I owned an automotive/off-road fab shop for years but I've moved on. I own a Gen 1 and a Gen 2. I did not get lost on the way to anywhere.

I drove the Gen 1 in the rain last week and it transported me back to driving my '89 Chevy reg cab short bed, you just barelly roll on the throttle around a little turn, otherwise the back will come around. Not a concern with 4a. But, I'm sure you know all that.

I'm just not sure why you would come in here with an attitude like that. There's enough Gen 2 guys who think it's the best thing since sliced bread. Everyone who owns a Gen 2 seems to think guys who own Gen 1's are just too poor to afford them. Either way yes, I know how the 4A works, and how AWD in general works. My shop specializes in European vehicles. The way you word it just makes it sound like the Gen 1 is a shitbox.
