In the gear lube thread, it was discovered that there were some Raptors in the same years that actually had different things listed. I don't think there was much rhythm to what Ford was doing with them from year to year.

One thing to understand about fluid weights listings. the first number 75W or 80W is only what the fluid "Acts" like when cold. When warm, a 75W-90 & 80W-90 are the same thing. But with the limited changes in the differentials over the years when compared to the differences in the actual manuals, I have to wonder why there are so many differences in the manuals in the first place.

If you notice Ford says in the notes that the rear end, unless submerged in water, is lubricated for life with the synthetic lube, but every pic I've seen of the lube coming out looks pretty weird , grey and strange, I wonder if it's something special from the factory besides normal gear lube?

Thanks for all the info gents, got it all done with Amsoil. I've done the engine and already see my mpg climbing, so that's awesome. I haven't done the rear diff yet, but to chime in on this thread my manual (2013) says 75W-140, and my local amsoil guy said to add in SlipLock as a modifier. From the sound of it, I don't need that?

Also my manual says transfer takes Mercon LV. Haven't taken a look for that Ford stamp yet but I'm assuming it's there based on my manual.

The ford lube is dark grey. That's normal. It's the milky foam that's worry some. If you off-road your raptor it'll be submerged

I like AMS oil but after watching this, I'm going to do Royal Purple.

Oil Test Royal Purple Vs Amsoil - YouTube

After watching this vid, the test seems biased towards RP. Notice how the operator basically slams the weights onto arm when testing the amsoil products and how he gently places them when testing the purple stuff. There's a significant difference in force when velocity is increased. Let's not forget our physics: F=m*a
I'm not biased towards any brand of oil, I just feel this test was a little one sided. I just want a quality oil that will protect my toys.

Andrew, just a week or two ago I installed a rear differential cover and AMSOIL gear lube, both of which I bought from Chris at Freedom Motorsports. I am so enthusiastic that this morning I spent a good deal more with him - gear lube for the front differential, transmission fluid, and transmission pan. You will be gratified by doing business with a fellow Marine. I can't say enough good about Chris.

Thank you for your service. Bless you.

It's relatively easy to adulterate the gear lube in the rear differential for three reasons - the breather hose only goes up to the bottom of the bed, Ford didn't even put a hose clamp on the breather nipple on the axel, and it's an open hose with nothing to prevent water from entering it when submerged.

My solution was to buy 18 feet of 5/16 fuel line, an aftermarket breather filter, and hose clamps and run the breather hose along the frame rail up into the highest part of the engine compartment. Problem solved - permanently.

You do NOT need the sliplock additive in your rear differential. The locking rear diff doesn't require it.
