Changing oil at 1,000 miles is a waste of money and time.

And if you're running synthetic, changing it at or before 5,000 miles is a waste of money and time.

First oil change - I'd wait until 5,000 miles (but check your oil level - if it's somehow down a quart take it in).

Synthetic oil - check your oil level at 5,000+ and go until 7,000 miles or so before changing it.

All this talk about peace of mind is old school. Changing the oil and filter is very important but changing it too soon is simply a waste of time, money and resources.

Its your truck do what you want... If you dont mind spending an extra couple hundred a year on oil and spending an hour to do it, thats up to you. I sent mine to blackstone labs to have it analyzed by a professional. The guys in the white coats that do it for a living. Spend years learning how oil breaks down and its molecular design. If that guy tells you to go longer, well thats what I pay him to do. Just a tip for short term oil changers.. Oil molecules are square and as they wear the corners break down. This in turn makes the oil wear less on the metals as it protects. Change your oil a little less often, 5,000 miles to 7500 miles and your engine will experince less wear and break down than the guy that changes it every 3,000 miles... This is your science lesson for today... Thanks...

I did my 1st change a week ago at 1200 miles. The dealer said first change should be at 5k; I was willing to pay $33 to change to a full synthetic (Mobil 1) and K & N filter (autozone had a deal).

I do plan to send my oil for lab analysis, and I'll use Amsoil, probably at 7500 intervals, depending on lab test results.

Your going to get about a million different opinions on this.

Here's mine:
No need to change your oil at 1K. "Break In" = old school.
7500 mile oil changes = no thanks.

3,000 miles - oil change
6,000 miles - oil change
9,000 miles - oil change
on and on and on....

This is my routine EXCEPT I add oil and change the filter at 3k and change at 6 or 7k. Amsoil and EA Filters. Overkill yes but so what.

If using full synthetic, many on the market today can actually go longer than 7500 miles without breaking down, with proper and adequate filtration. Like stated above, the key to maximizing both your protection as well as the money spent is to utilize used oil analysis from either Blacstone Labs or Oil Analyzers(AMSOIL).

That being said, I have used, tested and studied many different types of synthetic oils (not all in the same vehicles and not all mine, some of the testing was performed using customer vehicles utilizing used oil analysis_)

This is and of itself is the main reason I use and sell AMSOIL. There is no other oil on the market today that can stand up to the extreme conditions in newer high performance engines. Period.

If I can help anyone with more information about AMSOIL full synthetic engine oil (which BTW is WARRANTED for up to 20K miles in normal duty driving and 15K miles in severe duty applications_) Yes, I understand that most will never let it go THAT far, but IMHO, the manufacturer recommended intervals are a good starting point on judging the quality and stability of the oil. If it CAN last that long, then it is bound to protect better than others that break down sooner...

I can't wait to see how the Amsoil 100% syn does compared to the Mobil 1 syn.

5000 to 7500 miles or how many months? Does the length of time matter? I do short trips so I know I need to change more often, but how does that work with full synthetic? I only have 700 miles on my truck but I was going to change after 1000k. How soon should I go to full synthetic?

It's not a BAD idea to do your first oil change at between 1-2K miles to get the break in oil out of the engine. But the time limits placed on synthetic oils are not necessary like they were in the old days. It use to be this way with older non synthetic oils because they would even break down sitting on the shelf, while many of them would actually begin to break down immediately and be toast within a couple thousand miles. Even with your short trip daily driving you should not have to worry about the month limits initially. However, because all environments, vehicles and driving habits are different; regardless of the oil you choose to run in your truck, I highly recommend that you begin a regimen of performing used oil analysis testing beginning at your first 4-5K mile interval. This will help you to know for certain how your specific driving environment will effect the longevity of any oil in your engine while eliminating the guess work. Then, IF recommended by the labs that you can extend your intervals further, follow their recommendations.

AMSOIL puts the "or one year" disclaimer on their oils so that people will not simply install their oil and leave it without paying attention to their maintenance. They understand that it is NOT magic snake oil...
