Dreaded 4x4 popping and disengaging

Its not the cubicle jockey engineer who makes the final decision. Its accounting.

So many of our designs and projects are very worth while, then it gets to the bean counters and they say "its too expensive, it needs to be less than ......." so designs get redone to be cheaper.

for ford its still cheaper to replace the lines then if they were stainless braided.

Stainless braided was probably 10 times the cost, so they can replace every line on every truck build 9 times before it becomes cost prohibitive.

I get some awful grinding and a few pops or two every time I shift into 4 wheel drive off road. If I shift in to 4x4 BEFORE I get I into the crud then im good. Im in 4x4 on a daily basis for work. I just hope it doesn't get worse over time.

Joe... I switched all my lines and engine hoses to silicone. In -50 temps no more brittle rubber hoses cracking .

It does seem weird no aftermarket fix for this; is it a definite cold weather issue?? Do the steel lines actually fix it?

Good idea, Chav2012. What's the model year/mileage of your truck? Come back and post what happens at the dealership.

So here's my status update just came back from the dealership and yes ofcourse they tell me they re set the 4x4 comp module and have taken the truck off road and have not heard any noise. So the Service rep tells me if I want to take a test drive with him I drive it to their "testing" location go up a hill get into loose dirt make a sharp left turn and yes sir there goes the loud noise I was complaining about. A week at the dealership and they didn't check what I told them to check. They glanced under the truck and didn't see anything bent so moved on to something else. I drove back to the dealership to get the technician that's going to do the actual work and told him what I have read on here and he tells me he will take everything apart to check it, but that he also drove it before and didn't hear anything so I took him to their testing spot and also showed him the noise. They have me a rental and told me it should be fixed in a couple of days that they will start work first thing tomorrow morning.... Will keep everyone updated.. Thanks

So FINALY good news the Servide rep called and told me they took apart the IWE and it was fine but the cv joint or half shaft as they also call it, was really stiff and stuck they replaced it in one day!! Picked up my truck today test drove it ofcourse with the service rep and all is well again no more noise!! Very happy to get my truck back!

So I've been off road a couple of time in the truck and no problems in 4x4 but yesterday was the first time I was in a dry river bed and in really really soft sand, almost blow sand. I was in manual shift mode and I engaged 4x4 while stopped and started to drive, all of the sudden a loud ass bang scared the shit out of me and the truck stopped. I thought wtf and gave it some more gas, moved a couple of inches and bang again. I stopes and put it in park then back into regular drive, no problems drove in the soft stuff for an hour.

Got back onto pavement disengaged 4x4 and drove, as I'm going I here a whistling sound, I'm thinking **** I broke something out there. Get to a stop light and start again and BANG,,, I thought someone rear ended me with the jerk of the truck. Then the whistling noise stopped, I realized that the 4x4 had still been engaged and finally let go.

So long story short, I turn the 4x4 knob and the truck doesn't want to come out of 4x4 right away. It lags for a few minutes then disengages. The truck has 2,000 miles on it... Wtf

What do you all think, blown IWE's, vacuum leak/ solenoid issue?
