Having been stock to highly modified on my 2010 and now back to a stock 2014, I find myself asking this question: Was the highly modified 2010 that much more fun to drive in relation to the coin it cost to get it there? Brace yourselves because my answer is shockingly no!

When I look back, it would be safe to say the highly modded truck could go 20mph faster through the rough. But at what cost? $20-$25K ball park. So $1,000 per 1mph. Seems steep.

With a few desert trips under my belt in the mid perch 2014, I've been reminded how fun these trucks are out of the box. That's not to say 3.0s and a bumpkit are out of the picture or a worthwhile upgrade but I guess what I'm getting at, are the full kill items worth it at the end of the day. It's never gonna be a legit whoop eating "race" truck unless your budget is north of $50K so at what point does the Cost to Fun Ratio make sense?

I got your cost to fun ratio right here Tiz. Stop delaying the inevitable.

This is one of the reasons why I'll be racing this year.

There's going to be a lot of different views/opinions here. For me modding vehicles, being a car enthusiast is a hobby and something I enjoy. Its something I did from when I was a kid and worked summers mowing yards to build BMX bikes. Its something I do with everything.

I do think there is a cost to fun ratio and its different with each person/budget. I've gone from enjoying street cars with mild mods to building race cars with terrible drivability that were no longer fun to drive. Sold and bought something else. I like the project of it all, having a image in my mind and seeing it come to reality. I Just enjoy the process. Everything else is the bonus. Friends you make, trips, compliments, etc.

Gee. Thanks Charlie. This would've been good information BEFORE YOU TALKED ME INTO MODDING ALL MY SHIT, ************!:rondod:

Dude I have read this entire thread at least 3x to keep me grounded. But this post ^^^ is the ******* best! Now back on topic please. All jokes aside, I think this thread and "all" the perspectives within it are very helpful.

Well...the following is only my opinion...

The question "Is it worth it?" is relative to the individual.

I just bought a new 2014 Screw that I haven't even seen or driven yet and I am already up to $50k in planned mods.

I work in Saudi 9 months of the year...and am home in Canada for 3.
3 months here...one month home. I never got married and don't have any children...and no plans for either.

When I go home for a month...I like to enjoy myself. I already built a 700HP Nascar replica that gets driven like it's stolen...but only on nice days during summer.

This Raptor is just yet another "project" to keep me busy while I am home.

***** bars, escorts and beer were fun...but I have nothing to show for the tens of thousands of dollars that I spent on that stuff...except great memories.

So...it is my humble opinion...that the Cost to Fun Ratio depends on the individual.

How much you put into a truck that already costs upwards of $50k will depend on your financial and personal situation. How far you go with it will depend on your personality or what you want to do with the truck.

Either way...enjoy it as much as you can...while you can...and keep the rubber side down.

What suspension mods do you have planned that cost upwards of $50k?

Ha ha ha ha ha...

Well...I am thinking about a Brenthel Long Travel Race set up for the front with +2 or +4 fenders and dual Kings.

And for the rear...Giant Suspension Daily Driver Link with bed cage and dual Kings.

As soon as I get home it's gonna get a CAI, tune, exhaust and new tires...that'll do it for this time home...but I can see this turn into another never ending project.

But...nothing set in stone yet...still in the planning stages.

if i were to do it all over again i'd grab a super duty and a rzr and call it a day.

most people can attest to the fact every trip i go out on and drive my truck, something breaks... i'm on my fourth power steering pump replacement... no joke.

i don't even drive my truck that hard.

a super duty alleviates the issue of limping back a broken truck at the end of an already expensive trip. with a rzr i can just load it up on the trailer and tow it back to home base where i can fix it at my leisure instead of worrying about how i'm going to run errands or whatever else.

not to mention for under 10k in mods on a xp1k, 99% of raptors will get left in the dust. the 1% are the fully linked/LTd trucks. just bundle up in the winter, cause it gets cold as shit.

however, after all of that - i'm glad i got a raptor in the end... i've met a lot of great friends thanks to this highly dysfunctional community - and it's too late for me to unmod and sell so i guess i might as well go all out.
