From a purely financial standpoint it makes no sense. My truck is nothing special: icons, bumpstop, springs, wheels, front/rear bumpers, lights. I've still spent a ton of money on it, and could have gotten better bang for the buck getting a wildcat/rzr and any full size to tow it. That's also the reason I don't keep track of how much is in any vehicle I modify.

Every time I get a vehicle I lie to myself saying I won't touch it. I've been succesful once, with a Volvo s40. To me it's something I enjoy, and don't mind the money going to cars. I'm hoping I keep the raptor, but so far every other car I've had once it was "finished" it was time for a new project.

Trying to rationalize the money from a logical standpoint is difficult. Hell, the raptor isn't even the best platform to start out on once you go with a big build.

I know how you feel. Went a similar route with an Sti. The worst part was, it wasn't I was in to deep that I realized I should have started with an Evo  . I'm not going any further than Geiser Bros coils, deavers, bump kit and bumpers.

After a set of front springs/rear leafs it seems a lot of people are noting dimished returns. Of course if you live in a area where you can run wide open desert @ 70+ it seems a lot of people feel different.

I don't understand why guys say they should have bought a SuperDuty and a Rzr instead of the Raptor. SD's are ruffly the same price and can tow without an issue, I have towed my 6000lbs Sport Trac several times now and have no complaints what so ever so to me that's no a valid reason

As far as cost I'd say that it's worth it to me, I would have spent the $ on 1 truck or another but this one "should" hold its value much better than anything else I've owned, and it also makes it nice that I can leave the race track in Pahrump and hit Dumont then Barstow on the way home...

Here's my take on it. I have built and ran, raced mud drag trucks, extreme rock crawlers and tough trucks. Guess what you never get your money back out of them. You do it and build them because that's what you like to do. Some people drink some do drugs some travel, I like doing all of the above and building trucks, ok..i don't do drugs but if I did I could probably hide more money from my wife, lol. I'm new to this sand and long travel stuff but love learning a new sport. Am I gonna put my family in a shelter over it, no. But at the same time I didn't buy the Raptor to park it in the garage for an investment opportunity in 20 years.

A Raptor will tow 3-5000 (all you'd be towing with even a couple Rzr's) no problem or most any other toy (boat, race car, etc). I personally really enjoy mine and it does a fair share of towing but I have access to a SD if I need to tow something big, which is nice.

I like Gordon's reply, but since I've gone overboard with the linked raptor with king 4.0s and a full cage with harness, I'm happy.

For me, it was a matter of safety. If anything happened to a passenger, I'd never live it down. So, if I can afford it, why not do it?

The desert can and does change on a whim, no matter if you prerun. So now, if I hit an unexpected hazard, or like what happened to me in Mexico on a burm, my truck can and will take the 2-3' foot drop/burm without hurting the occupants.

Coming behind Connor in his dust cloud, we crested a hill the it dropped to a hard right. As soon as I got over the hill and was on the down part, a group of guys stopped at the apex of the hard right. At whatever speed I was going, I was forced to take the turn way wider then I should have, which made the rear end ride up over on the 2-3' burm. Regardless of the fact, thanks to taking pointers from Connor and Marvin to keep my foot in it, if the truck was stock, I would have rolled it something fierce. If that were to have been the case, without a cage or harness, I wouldn't be writing my opinion on the string.

How do I put 50-75k on my life or passengers? If I can do it, why not make it more safe and enjoyable?

Just my humble 2 cents worth.

Kevin
