The engines in the 2017-2019 raptor and the non raptor are identical minus pistons. That is internally. Externally turbos and manifolds and so on. Rings and pistons are very literally the only difference inside the engine.

If you want or have specific questions. Shoot, I have about 25 of them at shop.

2019 updated cam phasers like I mentioned earlier along with some examples of how we prevent what happens, that was explained as well. Happy to get specific, check out prior posts.

I've often wondered this.
So the Raptor engine isn't simply a tuned F150 ecoboost?
I assumed it was...

The reason for my post was mainly to comment that the gen 2 Raptors are using the gen 2 ecoboost and wanted to show that there is a huge difference between gen 1 and gen 2 ecoboosts so they can't be compared for issues (stronger cam chain, hollow camshaft etc).

There are gen 1 3.5l that make 320 HP and some that make 380 HP just like the gen 2 3.5l eco in the Raptor makes 450 while the 3.5l in the GT makes 650. Since the pistsons are the same displacement, other things must be different to make the higher output like bigger, turbos etc. But if they are identical internally (except for stronger pistons etc) then that's a good thing.


To RMB_Ryan: last I read about this issue (in this thread somewhere a few pages back, and I did read the entire thread) was that the part(s) number(s) was/were the same as in 2017 and was also occurring in the 2019s but no one stated they have a 2019 and are having the issue.

Are you saying there is indeed a change that Ford made to rectify this issue in the 2019s?

So are they replacing bad cam phasers with these updated 2019 ones and they are not coming back?

Raptor is 10.0:1 CR while the non raptor is 10.5:1. (Gen1’s were 10.:1)

The above CR is a change in solely piston, meaning no head gasket or another changes.

Same rods and bearings, clearances and specs.
Pistons are a better piston but still cast, and oil squirters are a little different to accommodate the hollow cast in galley in each piston which oil injectors into at BDC to keep it cool and ring lands specifically.

Non raptor pistons are. It as nice, and have no cast in oil galley in the piston which is what it is, we’re talking cast pistons. Raptor has nicer and one of nicest cast pistons. Not to be mistaken for a nice piston when you compare them to a 2618 forging or even high silicon forged piston. Example being raptor piston is probably
2 bucks to make, maybe $2.25, non raptor maybe $1.00-1.25 and forged pistons like what we have just the rings alone are on another ballpark let alone the 5 axis crown and undercrown milled forged side relief piston design we spec.

The piston rings, along with no oil drain backs in 3 pcs oil rail on the raptor pistons means all the oil scraped down the cylinder wall has no ingress for pin lubrication and ford wants 100% of it to lubricate the cylinder walls. Oil squirters for raptor handle pin and cooling piston. It’s freaky not seeing oiling holes drilled through for piling pin like a manufacturing error occurred or something. Interesting stuff.

I’m sure the new log blocks are updated, and 2019 people will have to chime in to really see if any issues are rearing their eggy heads still. I’d like to say no, but by nature you will always heat forum members having the most issues and bulk of people who are in general as they are coming to a place to search for answers.

Honestly the 2018 coyotes are having far more issues for sure

Cool. Thanks for the info....

As mentioned before, we have to be careful and keep things in check. An updated part/part number doesn't necessarily mean the original was bad. It could mean it was bad or simply that they found a way to make it better and changed it while also preventing some of the failure issues that occur in certain applications.

And like you said: people, like myself, come to the forums looking for answers and a lot of people post to explain their issues with the product and that's all you see. Lexus had a major recall in 2015 for 2011-2014 models of their IS350 for some engine issue that required the engine to be opened up. That's 3 years of "failure" and they're considered to be the one of the best auto manufacturers.

Anyway, good info. I've got an order in for mine. Probably be a couple of months...

Or it could've been a subpar vendor. Since Ford uses different ones, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that's what happened to save a few bucks

Considering the predominant amount of cam phaser issues seem to be with 2018s, I'm thinking this is the case.
