I got my truck back from the dealer. Initially we suspected cam phaser round two. Ford Engineering got involved and the “deceleration rattle” was actually caused by defective phaser solenoids on both exhausts shafts. Ford replaced all four to an updated part. Truck idles and runs like a Swiss watch!

Question for RMB, do you have a lot ecoboots run this oil. .? I would be Leary of a diesel oil. And 40wt. How do you feel about their 5-30. I assume you don't like the specs?
Every single customer who has access to it. I would say 200-250 if 80% of customers used it in last 12 months. I have over 300 or 350 analysis done in all different usages and miles. Thing is it is not a “diesel” oil other than by API requirements. Call them up, they are crazy smart.

Mobil one. Nothing wrong. This is a better oil with good zinc. API specs force less than quality oils these days

Flat tappets need zinc, rollers don't...
Also zinc kills cats, thats why the new rotella no longer has zinc
Yes on zinc oils for older muscle cars, motorcycles, etc. But not ecoboost

I understand that zddp and specific zddp additive packages do well with flat tappet and “muscle cars. However this is not the same additive package as those. I’m not going to get into an oil debate, use the information I provided as you see fit. We have been building engines for 3 generations, I am aware of what you are referring to, and have experience in these engines in every facet. This oil does not kill cats specifically. One reason it is chosen and we use it. Thank you

The 3.5l ecoboost for the Raptor is not the exact same engine as the 3.5l ecoboost found on the F-150 (non-Raptor). The 3.5l is tweaked or changed (probably slightly) based on the application (e.g. it's HP ranges from 320 to 380 depending on the platform it will be used on). Of course I believe the main comonents are going to be the same but the things that do change may be problematic for the new application.

Also, the 3.5l ecoboost was redesigned in 2015 (known as gen 2) and first used in production in 2017. So gen 1 3.5l ecoboosts cannot be fairly compared to gen 2 3.5l ecoboosts.

It seems as though the 2nd gen 3.5l ecoboost is being used with the 2nd gen Raptor, so there could indeed be some growing pains even though the Raptor and gen 1 3.5l ecoboosts have been out for ~10 years.

I've read about 2017s and 2018s (and prior gen 1 ecoboosts) with the cam phaser issue but can't find any cam pahser issue data on 2019s so the issue may have been fixed for 2019, going forward.

If anyone has a 2019 (with specific details about it having the issue) please chime in!

The engines in the 2017-2019 raptor and the non raptor are identical minus pistons. That is internally. Externally turbos and manifolds and so on. Rings and pistons are very literally the only difference inside the engine.

If you want or have specific questions. Shoot, I have about 25 of them at shop.

2019 updated cam phasers like I mentioned earlier along with some examples of how we prevent what happens, that was explained as well. Happy to get specific, check out prior posts.
