Purchased a CPO 2018 lead foot gray in May w 27k mi. Awesome vehicle! Never owned a full size truck much less a beast like this. Love it. Pic is when I had to park on a curb in a full lot

In sept noticed an intermittent light upper engine rattle both cold or hot starts for 1-2 sec. I’ve had it at two different dealers. One “didn’t hear a noise” and the other says “...all these vvt engines have valve train noise”. In other words all is normal.

I don’t buy it. Sometimes sounds like a diesel on start. But I guess it has to get worse before they’ll see it.

I'm not a warranty person. Might buy the extended before CPO runs out.

How much of this start up noise is actually by design? All cars have a cold start procedure which generates more noise than usual. I've listened to all the videos and I don't hear the difference between my 19 (and I owned an 18 as well) Raptor cold start and this Cam Phaser issue. Maybe both had it and I didn't notice or both didn't have it and I'm hearing the normal cold start loudness.

My Alfa 4C is ungodly loud when it's cold for the first few seconds when it fires. The Raptors have been no different.

Is there is indeed, a clear and loud video or .wav file of this issue, I'd for one love to hear it.

Take a coin toss it in a can, shake it around and that’s the sound on start up. Overtime it’ll get louder and louder. Just waiting for my check engine light to come on. Started at 2k miles. I’m at 10k now.

oh. got it. yea. It's not the normal cold start noise. I think that recording should be the bench mark. I watched a lot of other videos and it sounded like the normal cold startup noise.

Dealer told me that my cam phasers were the worst they had ever heard.
We're not just imagining this.
Dealerships have better things to do than tear down the top end of these engines to replace all the cam phasers because an owner is imagining a noise.
