My dealership said ford just released this as the cause
It could be a cause, or it could be a contributor, but people here have reported the phaser actually lunched; that is, you could essentially free spin one of the shafts. That’s bad btw.
I do think that the solenoids are probably the biggest contributor to the ubiquitous ‘start up rattle’ issue but there have been a few other failures from hard parts. I think it’s possible that a solenoid failure or a “lazy” solenoid could have you starting up with some relatively bad timing for the instant after startup but if it’s transient, how much damage is that actually causing, if any?
When you look at the symptom pattern from
@OPT PRIME, the rattle present at any condition other than idle is problematic and necessarily has to be putting more strain on the components - hence not all repairs are implicating the timing chain and guides. Only the repairs where evidence of need is there.
so - is there actually a TSB and revised solenoid part #?
