My/17 build, had CAM phasers replaced twice. 1st time at 27,000 and 2nd time at 33,000. No mods. st time 24 days in the shop 2nd time 4 days. I made sure they had the parts and the tech was ready for it the 2nd time. This time I got Ford CS involved and the contacted the dealership. they really stayed on top of it.

The latest motor oils are GF6(A & B) and the API designator will be SP. They’re not available yet. These oils are especially formulated to meet new requirements to prevent LSPI & cam drive systems wear. There is more info on the web. In the interim, I recommend using an oil rated as “SN Plus”, as it is the first attempt at combating the LSPI & timing chain wear occurring in DI & Turbo DI engines.

Do NOT run a diesel-rated oil as the extra detergents are a prime cause of LSPI.

Would a Lucas additive possibly help?

Nope - nothing has helped. It is a parts issue and the latest revision parts don't seem to be working either. It looks like it is cheaper for Ford to warranty these once or twice in the traditional warranty period, and then they make $4k on you each time after.

They will get it revised, class action will catch up in the long run of not. People don’t push to hard when it’s in fords ticket but as these trucks age it will become a problem for them.

Waiting on parts to get mine in, they said they will only replace phaser. Does this issue have anything to do with a pinging like sound at hard accelaration between 3k and 4k rpm
