It was my understanding that they are to be left in when the intake is a single pipe to the air filter. Like the stock box or the Roush system (ran the Roush on my 2018 and I did leave them in place), but the Cobb intake uses divorced intake piping; the swirl generators are no longer as useful. This is why Cobb manual says you can remove them with their ots tune and intake.

I know this is an old threat but do the 2019s not come with the silencer piece? Bought my 19 brand new and it doesn’t have them

Odd that you mention this, again old thread but I wanted to state that my 2020 did NOT have them in the inlet tubes. When I installed my Cobb intake, they just weren’t there. I’ve been researching this and came across your comment.

From Geoff at Full Race to me. Hope this can help with questions or concerns with the silencer rings.

the attenuation rings in the intake tube are to reduce turbo noise. (Soccer Mom's dont like to hear the turbo). however the latest generation 18+ turbos all use a new design compressor stage with updated blade aero. This simultaneously increases airflow/HP and makes less noise (NVH = noise vibration harshness).

divorced pipes are not needed, but they do gain power - especially on bigger turbos than 11-16. the gain in power is quite simple - there are reduced pumping losses because we do not merge a single air filter into two turbo inlets. Reduced pressure drop across the inlet is a very easy way to gain power

Great informann and very much appreciated.

So with all this being said, since I own a 18 and have the stock airbox will it decrease power gain if I remove them?

It seems that once removed you will definetly get more intake noise

I'd just invest in an aftermarket metal intake if you want a louder turbo spool
