The use of plastics in the engine compartment reduces the amount of heat retention that metal has. Plastic intake manifold, plastic valve/cam covers, plastic intake systems. Do you remember when they were all built using metal? If I remember correctly in my 1969 Mach I the only thing not metal were the hoses. Maybe it saves weight but I think it is just a cost saving measure. I am pretty sure all manufactures are doing it...
